As you all know, we got a new doggy addition to our “K” crew – Karat Diamond…

She is a Yorkie-Poo mix, who is a real sweetie-pie.

We brought her in to our favorite dog salon to show her to our favorite groomers and Debbie surprised me with a terrier cut for her face, instead of the poodle-look she had going on, as we have 3 other terriers in our little family, not including my mother’s 2 terriers.

Check out this cool video:

Debbie more clearly defined Diamond’s beautiful, brown eyes and pretty eyebrows, as well as trimming up the sides of her face to make a more brick-like look that schnauzers have, in particular.

She was so well behaved for them and she is such an adorable girl! I’m just in love with this dog!

What kind of Terrier-Poodle mix do you think Diamond is? Yorkshire? Schnauzer? Maybe a Cock-a-poo? Let us know your opinion by leaving a comment below…

We adopted a 14-month-old Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle mix “puppy” last week named “Diamond”.

She was my husband’s cousin’s dog, but her life just got a little hectic with a change in work and a newborn baby that she felt she couldn’t give Diamond the attention and care she deserves.

So, she asked us to “babysit” her for a while – I’m sure that she knew we’d fall in love and the rest is history.

Since all of our dogs’ names start with the letter “K”, we slightly renamed her with an official name of “Karat Diamond”, but we still call her Diamond!

With her silky, curly black hair and a white diamond on her chest, it’s a strange result from crossing a Yorkie and a Poodle together. Poodles are often one color and Yorkie’s are always a combination of black and tan or blue and tan.

She’s definitely a terrier, almost resembling a miniature schnauzer in the face, just like our other 3 babies. However, she is also very poodle with her long legs!

Diamond is so playful, as puppies should be and she is a sweet surprise for our terrier-loving household.

She has not yet met her brother and sisters, but she will next week – and I know she’ll be so excited to have so much action going on all the time. Plus, my mother’s 2 terriers will also help with the dog pack babysitting!

Check out our first video of Diamond:

I guess my Mom’s “baby”, Precious, won’t be the baby anymore! Even though she’s just over 2 years old, she still acts like and wants to be the BABY!

However, when it comes to puppies, other little animals like our hedgehogs and the like, she likes to take over and herd the rest of our little pack away so she can be in charge and take care of them. Too cute!

Really, I think Diamond and Precious will make a sweet friendship as Diamond really resembles her in the face with her cute, floppy ears, beautiful puppy-dog eyes and similar coloration.

Diamond & Kimberly

We’re very excited to introduce Diamond to Sugar, Kaptain, Knosey, Kurious, Precious and especially, her new Grandma – my Mom!

On the way home from church today in Dallas, we came to a busy intersection and what do I see?

I see a poor, little terrier mix dog confused and scared trying to make it through the cars.

What Did I Do?
In my church dress and high heels, I ran out to get the dog to safety on the sidewalk.

She was frightened, but glad at the same time that someone helped her out. She rolled over on her back with her belly to me, hoping I wouldn’t hurt her.

Well, she certainly came across the right person then!

She had no tag, she had mats in her hair and was full of burrs and was dirty too.

I ran back to the vehicle with her where my husband, with an understanding look on his face, started to scan the immediate area, as we drove around, trying to see if someone was looking for her, in case she just ran out of a yard or something.

The problem was that we were in an industrial area and there weren’t any houses and no one searching for a lost pet.

So, we went to the closest animal shelter, but it is Sunday and they’re not open. So, we called the number provided and a person called us to come collect her and see if she had a chip or could be reunited with an owner that reported her missing.

She was so sweet and very happy to give me a good cuddle for 2 hrs. While we waited, we gave her some food and water, as she was clearly hungry and very thirsty.

What a sweetheart – I think she was a bit older too.

She looked like she was mixed with a Yorkshire terrier or similar black & tan terrier and maybe a Schnauzer or a Poodle.

If you’re looking for this dog, she was found at the intersection of Plano Rd. & Forest Ln. in Garland, Texas (suburb of Dallas).

She has a partially cleft nose and her right ear missing, but you wouldn’t really know it unless you had a good look.

Please contact Garland Animal Services to reconnect with her.

She is such a sweet soul! I would miss her terribly if she went missing from our home – I fell in love with her immediately!

It could very well be that she got lost because of the terrible thunderstorms we had last night that knocked down numerous fences in our area…Poor baby!

Who knows, thunder and lightning used to scare one of our dogs until they were so fearful, they’d run and hide anywhere.

* PLEASE: Keep a collar and tags on your dog! We could have simply drove her home. Thank God we found her before she got injured out there!

I hope she found her way back to her owner’s loving arms! I would be going absolutely crazy without her!

If this is your dog – you are truly blessed to have her in your life – she is an ANGEL!

Very well behaved, so gentle and just as sweet as pie!

She seemed to be really exhausted from her ordeal, as she snuggled up into my arms and had a good, little rest.

I’m so glad she let me pick her up and trusted me that I was going to help her. Animals are so smart, aren’t they?

***

He was cute as a button!

However, we had to give him away to another loving family because he was not fond of my father. Fluff did not like my father near him or anyone else in the family. He would growl, snarl and snap at him.

Everything we tried did not help. It was obviously not the right dog for us, as he did not bond with my father.

We were beginners in dog ownership, and obviously did not take the right steps toward behavior modification and Yorkshire terrier training. I missed my little Fluff!

Terrier Newsflash:

I “stumbled upon” this story a few weeks ago, and it has bothered me since I read it…I just had to post about it!

Basically, the short version of the story is that a family brought their Yorkshire Terrier – Shih Tzu cross, who was about 4 months old, in to a Petco in Los Gatos, California to be groomed on March 22nd, 2008.

Just 8 hours later, Hurley was dead.

4 hours after dropping Hurley off for grooming, his parents came to pick him up, and Hurley was panting and breathing with some difficulty…but employees ensured them that everything went fine…

Being only 4 months old, Hurley’s parents suspected that Hurley was just a little stressed out from the new surroundings.

2 hours later, his breathing was even more taxed and he started to cough up blood. Yikes!

Immediately, Hurley was rushed to their local animal emergency hospital, where vets worked quickly and laboriously on the dog, whose heart stopped and was resuscitated twice. His lungs were filling up with fluid and he was literally drowning to death.

His loving family had to make that heart-wrenching decision to euthanize Hurley so that he did not have to suffer any more.

Needless to say, THEY WANT ANSWERS!

The 2 emergency room vets concluded that Hurley’s death was due to strangulation…Strange for a healthy dog that had the regular check-ups and all vaccinations on the schedule, passing with flying colors.

Hurley’s regular veterinarian suspects that there was cruelty and/or negligence on Petco’s part and even filed a complaint report with Animal Control, which Hurley’s parents also did to the Los Gatos Police Department.

The thing is, Petco has, in their possession, a tape of what happened in their grooming facilities, which neither Petco, nor their insurance company, will show or comment on regarding the injury that occurred that day. However, they are willing, even without a request, to pay for any and all emergency vet bills. Strange, you may say…

As Hurley’s parents searched for answers, they also uncovered a long history of documented complaints and cases against Petco for animal injuries, abuse, neglect and suffering…

To see more about these animal complaints against Petco, and more about Hurley’s cause, check out the post @:

What Could You Do To Protect Your Pet?

1. Make sure you take your pet to be groomed at a reputable groomer, for which you have received a referral from someone you know.

2. At many Petcos or Petceteras, etc, they usually have a viewing window, through which you can observe everything going on with your precious pet. People are less likely to be careless while being watched…If you have the time, I suggest this is a great option.

3. Learn how to groom your own pet at home…Not only will this save you $$$ over the long run, but it will create a bond between you and your pet. Also, you’ll only get better at it over time.

* Many terriers are groomed very similarly, and I recently posted about How to Groom a Welsh Terrier step-by-step…Check it out here:

Training a Yorkshire Terrier by Joshua McNiel

Yorkshire Terriers are an intelligent breed of dog. Many people decide to own a Yorkshire Terrier for this reason. However you need to know the correct way of training them.

In the U.S. the Yorkshire Terrier is the second most popular dog breed, only passed by the Labrador. Yorkshire Terriers are a popular pet breeds because they are loyal, loving, energetic, and smart.

If you want to train your Yorkshire Terrier to do a command such as sit, stay, fetch, or rollover, get lots of treats. When your Yorkshire Terrier does the command correctly, give them a treat and say “Good Boy or Girl”. Keep your training sessions short, and only try to teach your Yorkshire Terrier one command at a time. Your Yorkshire Terrier should learn most of the basic commands in 8-10 days.

Traing your Yorkshire Terrier to go potty outside can be somewhat difficult, as in all small dogs. The best time to start potty training your Yorkshire Terrier is when they are still a puppy. When you see your puppy going potty inside, simply speak loudly “NO!”, and take your puppy outside. Always take your Yorkshire Terrier to the same spot outside so they will become associated with the location and smell. Never physically hurt your Yorkshire, the tone of your voice is the most efficient.

Yorkshire Terriers are great pets who love to play, learn, and love. Be patient and consistent when training your Yorkshire Terrier and they will catch on fast.

Being healthy breeds, terriers have long life spans. A healthy Yorkshire Terrier will live between 12-15 years.

As with any breed, you will have some genetic disorders that can affect your dog. One of the defects that can plague your Yorkshire terrier is luxating patellas.

Luxating Patellas:

This means slipping kneecaps due to weak tendons, weak ligaments or shallow patellar grooves. Basically, the terrier’s kneecaps “dislocate” sideways.

In dog breeds prone to this condition, it can either be congenital (from birth) or acquired from trauma. Luxating patellas usually becomes noticeable around 4-6 months of age.

This will cause the dog’s leg to lock up, and the Yorkie will typically lift the leg off the ground. It is sometimes referred to as “trick knee”.

Surgery is an option, but not always necessary. This procedure consists of deepening of the trochlear sulcus in which the patella/kneecap sits, called sulcoplasty.

This condition may get worse over time, as the knee cap groove can be reduced even more by frequent knee slipping, and tendons and ligaments can get even weaker.

* Tip: If you have a Yorkshire terrier, it would be wise, either to help prevent trauma or further damage to this area of the body, to have pet stairs or a ramp up to furniture they are allowed on, so that they don’t have to exert themselves so much and irritate this area. Such large jumps, up or down, for such a small dog is difficult and puts a lot of strain upon their leg joints.

The Australian Silky Terrier: A Snake Killer?
By Michael Russell

The Australian Silky Terrier is thought to have been bred from crossing the Yorkshire Terrier with the Australian Terrier. This mix of the two breeds was meant to produce a toy dog with the gentle qualities of a small house pet and the inquisitive character and hunting skill of a terrier. Families who have Silkies will attest to the effectiveness of the cross.

It is obvious from the coloring of the Australian Silky that a Yorkshire Terrier had a part in its development, for it carries the gun metal blue coloring with rich tan points and silvery blue topknot quite similar to the Yorky. When the dog is born he is much darker and as he grows the tan markings fade to a lighter fawn shade and the gun metal blue becomes quite silvery. The ” Silky Terrier” is called the Australian Silky Terrier in Great Britain and in Australia, but is called the “Silky Terrier” elsewhere. In any case, the dog is definitely a terrier and meant to have the attributes of a terrier as far as its ratting and rodent killing abilities and in the case of the country of Australia, the little terrier is adept at killing snakes. The Silky is smaller than an Australian Terrier but larger than a Yorkie and the skull and muzzle are not as broad nor heavy as the Australian Terriers’, nor as long as the Yorky. In short this little dog has an almost equal mix of the qualities of the two breeds.

The coat care is simple enough, he requires a daily brushing and an occasional bath. Of course as always nails should be trimmed on a regular basis. The ears are erect and need only an occasional cleaning as they are not prone to ear infections. The hair on the face presents a bearded look and there is always more care on this type of muzzle as far as keeping the whiskers free of bits of food. Trimming can be done if necessary but his coat is easy to comb since it is exactly what it is called : “silky” and there is no undercoat. It lies flat to the body and does not tangle in the manner of a double coat.

The little dog is highly intelligent and is definitely a one family dog. It is wary of strangers and makes a good watch dog. When properly introduced it will accept strangers into the household but still will not be overly friendly. He is a very clean house pet and will get along with other animals in the household if he is raised with them. Of course the terrier temperament will come out if he is confronted and he can certainly do a good job of defending himself when necessary. Obedience competitors have found that the Silky is competitive in the Obedience ring and he is a favorite in the Conformation ring in most of the European countries, more so than in the United States.

The Yorkie, a Small Dog in a Dressy Package
By Michael Russell

Surprisingly, the Yorkshire Terrier, known for its fine “furnishings” and silky long coat, began it’s history as a scrappy rat catcher. Its most likely antecedents are a mixture of various Scottish and Welsh terriers, including the Skye terrier, the Clydesdale terrier and even perhaps the Dandie Dinmont.

Selective breeding through the years miniaturized the Yorkie. It is the second smallest dog in the American Kennel Club registry, (the Chihuahua being the smallest). Selective breeding also improved the texture and length of the coat. The Yorkshire Terrier is noted in the show ring today for its silky coat, characteristically of a steel blue color along the back and sides, gradually blending into a beautiful shade of “autumn orange”. The long hair on the top of the skull may be pulled back and fastened with one bow on the back skull or two bows on either side between its ears.

The coat care of the Yorkshire is extensive. The long silky coat does require a daily grooming. Those who do not have the time for such a chore would do well to take this dog to a groomer on a regular basis or else keep the coat trimmed to a manageable level. The length of the coat in an adult reaches the floor. Also, the facial hair around the eyes and the whiskers below the chin and on the moustache can collect a considerable amount of food mess and need regular combing out. Shampooing of the Yorkie is certainly easy, a kitchen sink with a sprayer attachment works well! The shampoo should not be a “human” shampoo, the dog shampoos that are also conditioners work well, and if the shampoo does not have conditioner in it, then extra conditioner should be applied. The coat should be brushed while slightly damp, it is preferable to have a hair dryer gently blowing the coat as you brush, since this helps to “separate” the hairs. Do not brush a “dry” coat, this will break the ends. If the dog has not been bathed, then spray the coat with fine mist as you brush. As with any breed of dog, and most especially a breed that is and “indoor” dog, its toenails also need to be kept trim on a regular basis. Every six to eight weeks is the norm.

The temperament of the Yorkshire is well suited to fashionable pampering. It seems that this little dog truly enjoys being “decked out” and beribboned. Most owners of Yorkies remark that their pet enjoys nothing more than a session of getting “dressed up” in its Sunday best to go out walking. However, a Yorkie who is not groomed from the beginning of its life as a puppy will NOT appreciate the attention of brushing and so on, and these little characters can present many a problem for a groomer who is not ready for a battle. If you have trained the dog to stand on a grooming table you will find that the job is relatively easy, especially if the grooming table is adjusted to your height.

The Yorkshire terrier possesses a loving and loyal temperament, but like most small dogs often has a difficulty with house-breaking. Although it most likely has lost its “ratting” instinct, it has maintained a lively and inquisitive temperament and is extremely well suited as a companion and pet. The lively character however can certainly lead to mischief and a Yorkie who is ignored can get into a lot of it!
