Welsh terriers were originally bred to hunt birds, foxes and badgers. However, this native breed of Wales soon rose to become a show dog. Breeders attempted to outdo each other by developing the Welsh terrier dogs’ wiry coats and coloration.
It is believed that the Welsh Terrier originates from the Old English Black and Tan Terrier. In fact, until 1900, the Welsh Terrier was called the “Old English Terrier” or the “Black and Tan Rough-Haired Terrier”. As the latter name implies, this terrier is black and tan in color.
People often take a Welsh terrier as a pet because it is one of the most mild-mannered of the terriers, but extremely intelligent and feisty as well.
Affectionately called the “Welshie”, this terrier breed has a a typical brick-shaped face, like the Airedale and the Schnauzer. It needs exercise and much mental stimulation in order to continue to be agreeable. With an idle mind, Welshies will figure out a way to get into mischief.

The Yorkie is definitely a little fashionista of sorts. Often seen with gorgeous tendrils of silky hair, and rhinestone encrusted collars, these terriers are superstars, if only in their own heads.
