Introducing “Karat Diamond” – Our New 14-Month Old Yorkie-Poo

Posted by Kimberly on 5th October 2009

Terrier Newsflash:

Diamond & Kimberly

Diamond & Kimberly

We adopted a 14-month-old Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle mix “puppy” last week named “Diamond”.

She was my husband’s cousin’s dog, but her life just got a little hectic with a change in work and a newborn baby that she felt she couldn’t give Diamond the attention and care she deserves.

So, she asked us to “babysit” her for a while – I’m sure that she knew we’d fall in love and the rest is history.

Since all of our dogs’ names start with the letter “K”, we slightly renamed her with an official name of “Karat Diamond”, but we still call her Diamond!

With her silky, curly black hair and a white diamond on her chest, it’s a strange result from crossing a Yorkie and a Poodle together. Poodles are often one color and Yorkie’s are always a combination of black and tan or blue and tan.

She’s definitely a terrier, almost resembling a miniature schnauzer in the face, just like our other 3 babies. However, she is also very poodle with her long legs!

Diamond is so playful, as puppies should be and she is a sweet surprise for our terrier-loving household.

She has not yet met her brother and sisters, but she will next week – and I know she’ll be so excited to have so much action going on all the time. Plus, my mother’s 2 terriers will also help with the dog pack babysitting!

Check out our first video of Diamond:

I guess my Mom’s “baby”, Precious, won’t be the baby anymore! Even though she’s just over 2 years old, she still acts like and wants to be the BABY!

However, when it comes to puppies, other little animals like our hedgehogs and the like, she likes to take over and herd the rest of our little pack away so she can be in charge and take care of them. Too cute!

Really, I think Diamond and Precious will make a sweet friendship as Diamond really resembles her in the face with her cute, floppy ears, beautiful puppy-dog eyes and similar coloration.

Diamond & Kimberly

Diamond & Kimberly

We’re very excited to introduce Diamond to Sugar, Kaptain, Knosey, Kurious, Precious and especially, her new Grandma – my Mom!

Happy Birthday Kurious Kissyface!

Posted by Kimberly on 10th July 2009

Terrier Newsflash:

That’s right! It’s that time of year again. We have the same birthday too!!!

New Downloads 018Kurious is officially 3 yrs old today – I just cannot believe it – my little puppy is a 3 year old (or a 21 yr old in dog years – WOW!).

She’s getting some extra special attention today and some serious treats for the entire crew, including their favorite – pig’s ears!!!

They are all so sweet – and they all look so confused about what the fuss is – but we all know and it’s a day to celebrate!

What a blessing to have her for 3 years – she makes each day a bit brighter with her in it!

What an angel-girl!

She still lives up to her name of Kurious as she needs to know everything you’re doing and all that is going on…Plus, she loves to give kisses – so, Kissyface was perfect from the first day we got her for her middle name! LOL

She has worked her way into the alpha of the group of 5 dogs here, but she still understands that mommy, daddy and grandma are above her in rank…LOL…

Happy Birthday My Baby Girl – Kurious!!!

Happy Birthday Knosey Konversation!

Posted by Kimberly on 7th July 2009

Terrier Newsflash:

New Downloads 020It’s Knosey’s Birthday again!

Can you believe my baby is already 3 yrs old? That’s 21 in human years!

She kicks off the line of 3 doggy birthdays and my birthday in our household! Knosey’s is on the 7th, Kurious’ and my birthday is on the 10th, and Precious Princess is on July 24th, with our 10th wedding anniversary in between on July 22nd!

Knosey is such a ball of happiness – so gentle and sweet, but can be ferocious like a lion with the stray squirrels in our back yard!

Knosey got her birthday song, as she loves it when you sing to her, and is all and all happy about all the confusion and fuss about it being her birthday.

I don’t think she’s really sure what we’re all fussing about, but she likes it nonetheless!

Her favorite toy lately has been the balls, Kongs and other toys you can put a treat into – they vex her to no end! She wants those treats and she gets very excited to try to release them as captives in her toys to eat them!

So, every dog gets one in the house to play with today full of treats! Plus, she’s getting a lot of extra special attention today!

She is such a sweet part of my day! I love this dog endlessly! She is such an angel and can’t wait to spend more time with the poochies today.

Yes, she still holds true to the name we gave her – She is as Knosey as ever and “all up in” our conversations as often as possible…Her middle name, “Konversation”, still suits her!

Love you Baby! Happy Birthday Knosey!

Knosey Had Her Staples Out Today

Posted by Kimberly on 19th August 2008

Terrier Newsflash:

Well, the vet said that the incision looks good and the area is not infected, and Knosey’s weight is normal.

Poor Knosey though…Apparently, it’s not fun getting your staples out.

She was very uncomfortable and wincing when they were cut…It didn’t feel much better being pulled out either…She was not a happy schnauzer!

There were 3 of us holding her down as the vet took them out…

She bled slightly out of a few of the holes, but the vet said that they will heal up quickly…Probably within the next 24 hrs or so.

Bless her heart…She is happy and perky, wanting to eat and play. We are so very happy she is alright now.

Thank you to the Niagara Veterinary Emergency Clinic for saving Knosey’s life 2 weeks ago!

Knosey is Perking Up!

Posted by Kimberly on 9th August 2008

Terrier Newsflash:

I wanted to give extend a real THANK YOU to all of you, who have been so sweet and kind as to send us well wishes and prayers for Knosey…For all of you who have called, emailed or Stumbled me…

Also, as an update, Knosey is really perking up now.

As of 3 days after surgery, she felt like eating on her own. 4 days later, she wanted to go outside without being coaxed.

…And as of yesterday, she wants to play with the other dogs…I am trying to keep the play to a minimum because she still has all of those staples in her tummy, but they will come out next Monday.

She has finished both courses of antibiotics and seems to have bright eyes and a bushy, little tail.

* The really strange thing was how odd our Kurious, Knosey’s sister, was reacting to Knosey when we brought her home from the hospital.

Kurious acted as though she was frightened out of her mind, maybe by the smell of the anesthetic or something??? She wouldn’t go near her for about 4 days! It was so sad, as they are best mates!!!

Kurious would shiver out of her skin if you carried her over to Knosey and would scurry away just as quickly! Very odd behavior indeed!

We are so grateful to God for saving our Knosey, and for the fantastic diagnosis and quick action taken by the Emergency Clinic that night!

I hope you enjoyed this Terrier Health post from Terrier Lover! Until next time…

Love Your Terrier,

Kimberly Edwards :)

P.S. To be perfectly candid with you, we were presented with a vet bill, including tests, surgery, after care and medication of over $2000.00 for this Emergency incident with Knosey…Believe me, we’ll be looking into getting pet insurance now, as we have 5 little ones in the household:

Pyometra & Your Dog

Posted by Kimberly on 3rd August 2008

Terrier Newsflash:

Knosey had emergency surgery last night for a pyometra, and the vet said if we waited until the morning, she may have been dead.

See the post from the early hours this morning: Knosey is in Serious Condition!!!

The symptoms of vomiting, fever, lethargy and bleeding occurred around 8 pm and we had her in the ER by 9 pm after doing some quick research online and calling the vet.

We thought Knosey was pregnant, and we would have had puppies within about 2 wks or so. In fact, we thought she was miscarrying, but it was actually a disease of an infected uterus.

Pyometra is common in female dogs and cats, but not really any other species of animal, nor humans, get pyometra.

It happens when, instead of a pregnancy, the uterus fills with a fluid and becomes inflamed and infected.

If it goes too long, the dog will die of toxicity.

Well, the vet said if we waited until morning, we may have lost her, but we are thankful to God today that the surgery went very well without any unforeseen circumstances. There were, in fact, no puppies at all.

We did not expect Knosey home until Monday morning, but she was doing so well today, by responding to the medication with her fever, being successfully weened off of her IV, and eating.

The vet felt she would recover quicker and be more comfortable at home.

We are truly blessed to have her alive.

Knosey is on 2 oral antibiotics at home to keep her from becoming infected:

1. Baytril 50 mg – 1/2 tablet every 12 hrs

2. Bioclav 125 mg – 1 tablet every 12 hrs

She has about 30 staples in her belly that will need to be removed by our regular veterinarian, and she will have to go in for follow-up.

When I picked Knosey up from the Emergency Clinic, she wined and cried, as if she was telling me all that had happened to her and how sad she was I left her there alone.

Knosey has been very tired since she’s been home, and spending her time asleep. I’m sure they gave her something for pain before she left the clinic.

Knosey is in Serious Condition!!!

Posted by Kimberly on 3rd August 2008

Terrier Newsflash:

From your previous reads, you may remember one of our girl miniature schnauzers, Knosey.

We just bred her, at 2 yrs of age, with our boy, Kaptain (Knosey & Kaptain – Bred at Last).

We were convinced that Knosey was pregnancy months ago (So We Think Knosey is Pregnant). Knosey had a False Pregnancy (Does Your Terrier Have a False Pregnancy?) a few months ago now, and then went into heat about 1 month ago, and we were overjoyed that everything was alright.

Knosey would be close to 6 weeks pregnant now and we would have been expecting a litter of pups come the end of August (Knosey’s Real Pregnancy?).

However, out of blue today, Knosey started vomiting and apparently, she had not eaten, as evidenced by the lack of substance in the fluid.

Then, I noticed blood on the tiles…She was bleeding. Concerned that this could be a miscarriage or infection, we rushed her to the vet immediately tonight.

We are so glad we did, as she has a Pyometra – a disease of the uterus most commonly seen in female dogs.

Instead of the uterus filling up with a pregnancy, it fills up with a fluid and becomes infected. The vet told us that there is a saying – “Never the let the sun go down on a pyometra!”

After blood tests were done, it was confirmed that she has a serious infection, as evidenced by the white blood cells in the discharge and her blood sample taken. X-rays confirmed that, in fact, there were no puppies…it is just a very inflamed uterus.

They are trying to reduce her fever and hydrate her before emergency surgery, probably starting within a few minutes from now…

We are grateful to God that we noticed the problem right away and went to the vet for investigation. Sad that Knosey doesn’t have babies, and due to the complete ovariohysterectomy, will never be able to have puppies, but…

…So Thankful that they will be able to save her life!

Without ovariohysterectomy surgery, or spaying, she could lose her life due to the toxicity of the infection.

The vet says that pyometra is common in dogs and cats, but not many other species of animal, and is not something that occurs in humans.

Although common, and the fact that the vet has performed numerous surgeries of this type, she says it is a serious and somewhat dangerous surgery and could have unforeseen complications.

The surgery should last about 2 hrs, and consists of removal of uterus, ovaries, etc, and thoroughly cleansing the area of the infection.

It’s dangerous because the uterus is so infected that they need to be very careful not to tear the uterus and expose other parts of the body to the infection.

Knosey will have to stay at the vet for about 2 days after surgery and will be sent home on oral antibiotics.

The vet assured us that Knosey will be under full anesthetic, have an ECG monitor, an anesthetist present and a team of vets that just happen to all be on tonight at the Emergency Hospital.

I will update you by 3:00 am, as she should be out of surgery and we should know the immediate outcome.

We appreciate everyone’s concern about Knosey and everyone’s prayers for her healthy pregnancy.

Grapes & Raisins Are a No-No For Your Dog

Posted by Kimberly on 25th June 2008

Terrier Newsflash:

GrapesI was shocked to hear this too, as my little ones have loved grapes for a long time. We have never had an apparent problem, as we know.

Our dogs have lived to be 18 yrs (Cock-a-poo) and 18 yrs (Cairn Terrier) respectively, and now we have a 12 yr old (Westie-poo), and 4 young Miniature Schnauzers, the oldest of which is 4 yrs old.

However, they get such a diverse diet, and we try to give them different fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.

So, in my thinking if grapes and raisins are said to cause acute renal failure, we can cut the grapes & raisins out of the mix.

RaisinsThe cause is unknown, but this acute danger was discovered around 2000 and has only been slowly publicized since. It is unknown if that includes sultanas and currants as well.

So, before you give your pooch 1 more grape or raisin, think twice!
