My mother’s Westie-Poo, “Sugar”, was sprayed by a skunk in the face about 3 weeks ago, as did my 2 miniature schnauzers, Knosey and Kurious.

We’ve tried to bathe Sugar numerous times with shampoos, tomato juice, mayonnaise and peanut butter, which worked the best of all of these home remedies.

However, my mother still couldn’t stand Sugar’s smell, so we resorted to bringing her to our favorite dog salon, Poodle Fluff & Puff in St. Catharines, Ontario where Joan Schoures and her granddaughter, Dana Sampson, takes care of our doggy’s problem.

She doesn’t regularly shed, but as she’s gotten older, I think she loses a bit more hair than she used to.

Being a white dog, it is espeically noticable in a few of our rooms with dark colored carpet, causing us to vacuum at least every other day!

Terriers, typically, don’t shed. They may lose some hair here and there as us humans do, but nothing more.

However, when you get into terrier cross breeds, they may very well carry those genes from a breed that sheds and lose a lot more hair than a typical purebred terrier would.

I went through the Dinovite solution questionnaire and got a specific report just specifically geared towards Sugar’s problems.

I know it’s crossed your mind before…”What if something happens to me?”

Then, you think…”My dogs need me!”

We don’t have children yet, so our 3 miniature schnauzers are our children! Some people who do have human children still take their pets lives as a precious part of the family.

The best way to counteract this issue of having something happen to you is to keep yourself healthy – stay fit, improve your nutrition, take your vitamins, prevent possible health problems.

This may sound funny to some people, but to many of us animal lovers out there, this is real. For many people, their animals are one of the only things that gets them up in the morning and sane during the day!

What if Something Happens to Me? My Dogs Need Me! is a post from: Terrier Lover

You must make sure they’re eating well, running around, playing and sleeping.

Puppies, as I have said before, should sleep 80% of the time, but when they’re awake, they ought to be playing around.

With changes in temperature, air pollution and everyday stresses, it is imperative that you watch your puppy for signs of  coughing and/or nasal discharge.

Coughing and nasal discharge can be signs of kennel cough!

Kennel cough is like the croup in children, and is very common.

If you happen to notice coughing or nasal discharges, you will need to act immediately to take care of the situation! DO NOT WAIT!

Follow these directions exactly ad call your veterinarian or breeder immediately if you have any questions.

Directions for a Vaporizer:
1. Get a vaporizer (not a humidifier – it’s not the same thing) and Vicks Vapor Steam.

* Tip: If you don’t have a vaporizer, go to your nearest “super store” and purchase the cheapest one they have.

2. Fill the vaporizer with water and pour in the directed amount of Vicks Vapor Steam.

3. Put the puppy in a crate and place vaporizer about 12-15″ from the front of the crate.

4. Cover up the crate and vaporizer with a sheet, but be absolutely sure to leave the back-side of the crate uncovered so it doesn’t get too hot for the pup.

5. Leave the puppy like this for 30 minutes. Do this at least 2-4 times per day!

The purpose of the vaporizer is to break up the congestion and therefore, the puppy will cough more.

* Tip: Coughing is good because they are getting the “crud” out of their system.

Directions for Nose Drops:
1. Buy nose drops (Nasal Decongestant) at your nearest “super store”. At WalMart, the “Equate” brand is the cheapest and works as well as the name brands.

* Tip: Buy NOSE DROPS, not nose spray!

2. Tilt the puppy’s head back and place 2 drops in each nostril 2 times per day.

Directions for Cough Medicine:
1. Buy Robitussin DM or buy Tussin DM at your nearest “super store”.

2. Give the puppy 1 c.c. of cough medicine. Give the cough medicine every 6 hours for about 4-5 days (1 c.c. = 1 ml; 5 ml = 1 tsp).

Directions for Chicken Livers:
Your puppy must eat well everyday even when they’re not feeling well.

1. To make sure your puppy is eating well, you must go to any grocery store and buy fresh chicken livers. They are located in the frozen meats section.

2. Boil them in a small amount of water for about 20-30 minutes and let them cool for 15-20 minutes.

3. Let the puppy eat small amounts of the chicken livers 2 times daily.

* Tip: Puppies that can’t smell will not eat, and that’s why it is very important to fix these for your puppy. They have a very strong smell that any puppy with a stuffy nose will still be able to smell.

Continue mixing the chicken livers with their dry food until the puppy feels better.

Follow all of these directions for 4-5 days.

So long as your puppy is running, eating and playing, the cough and nasal dishcarge shouldn’t be a problem if you adhere to these instructions.

* If nasal discharge turns green, or you think your puppy is not eating enough, call or book an appointment with your veterinarian or call your breeder immediately!

Even if your puppy needs an antibiotic, you will still want to follow these directions to help treat their symptoms. If you don’t follow these instructions, your puppy could possibly get pneumonia, which is very serious, and it could be fatal to them.

Act immediately so that this doesn’t happen to your terrier puppy!

If Your Terrier Puppy is Coughing… is a post from: Terrier Lover

Also, over-handling your new puppy and feeding them from the table can cause them to vomit.

* If your puppy is NOT playful or if the vomiting continues for more than 24 Hours, you MUST contact your veterinarian or breeder IMMEDIATELY!

* Puppies are like newborn babies and can DEHYDRATE & DIE very quickly!!!

If your puppy starts vomiting and is still very active, then follow these directions exactly:

Directions for Puppies that are Vomiting:
1. Take away ALL food and water from your puppy! If you let your puppy continue to eat and drink, they will continue to vomit!

2. Do NOT give the puppy any food or water for 6 hrs. The stomach needs time to rest.

3. Buy Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate at the grocery store. This is the same medicine that we, as humans, take for vomiting.

4. Give the puppy 1 c.c. (1 c.c. = 1 ml; 5 ml = 1 tsp) every 6 hrs. Make sure you give them 3 doses, even if the vomiting stops after the 1st dose. This will help settle the puppy’s stomach completely.

* Tip: Dosage for Pepto-Bismol in dogs is 1 c.c. per 4 lbs of body weight. As your puppy grows, you must increase the amount you give them.

Feeding Instructions While Your Puppy is Vomiting:
1. Buy fresh chicken livers, white rice and cottage cheese.

2. Boil the chicken liver in a small amount of water for 20-30 minutes, then let them cool for 15-20 minutes.

3. Boil the white rice until it is cooked and let it cool.

4. Mix 2 tbsp of rice with 1 tbsp of chicken and 1 tbsp of cottage cheese.

* Tip: If your puppy is still hungry then continue this mixture until the puppy is no longer hungry anymore.

* Tip: Keep the remaining food refrigerated.

5. If you have a small breed terrier puppy (miniature schnauzer, Yorkshire terrier, Lakeland terrier), then feed them 1 tsp about every 4 hrs. If you have a large breed terrier puppy (giant schnauzer, Black Russian terrier, Wheaten terrier), feed them 1 tbsp about every 4 hrs.

6. Continue feeding this mixture of food for 24 hrs. After the 24 hrs, you can start mixing dry food with the chicken, rice and cottage cheese. Mix 1/2 of the dry food with the amount of soft food listed above for your puppy.

Continue this feeding every 4 hrs for the next 48 hrs after the vomiting has stopped. After 48 hrs, you can continue the normal feeding schedule.

7. If you have a small breed terrier puppy, during the 1st 6 hrs without food and water, you can rub 1/2 c.c. of honey on their gums. This can be done every 2 hrs. It will keep their sugar level from getting too low.

Let Your Puppy Drink Pedialyte or Orange Gatorade:
1. If the puppy has not vomited after 6 hrs, you can give the puppy small amounts of fluid.

* For a small breed terrier puppy, you can let the puppy drink 1 tsp every 30 minutes. Add another 1/2 tsp every time you give the puppy fluid.

* For a large breed terrier puppy, you can double the amount of fluid.

After 24 hrs, you can continue with your normal water schedule.

Things such as stress from changing homes, vaccinations, over handling and changing food can cause diarrhea in your new terrier pup.

* If your puppy is NOT playful or eating well, you must contact your veterinarian or breeder IMMEDIATELY!

If your puppy gets diarrhea and is still very active and eating well, the follow these directions:

Directions for Diarrhea in Your Puppy:
1. Buy Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate at any grocery store. This is the same medicine we, as humans, take for diarrhea.

Give the puppy a mixture of 1/2 dry food and 1/2 the amount of chicken, rice and cottage cheese you have been feeding. Continue to increase the amount of dry food and decrease the amount of soft food until the puppy is eating dry food all by itself well.

6. Let your puppy drink Pedialyte or Orange Gatorade until the diarrhea is cleared up.

7. Continue giving vitamins, as directed by your breeder or Lickables tube.

* Tip: After 2-3 days, if the puppy is still playful and eating well, but the diarrhea has not cleared up, then contact your veterinarian for additional help.

Terrier Puppies with Diarrhea is a post from: Terrier Lover

1. Dry Food: Good quality puppy food, such as IAMS, Eukanuba, Science Diet or Diamond Puppy Food for small breeds

2. Canned Food: Good quality like Hill’s a/d can food (from a veterinarian) or even Little Caesar’s Select Dinners with chicken & liver in meat juices

3. Supplements: Cottage Cheese (the higher milk fat percentage, the better), Buttermilk, Orange Gatorade, Plain Yogurt (I prefer Balkan Style – higher milk fat percentage and thicker)

4. Vitamins: Breeder often gives you a bottle of liquid vitamins of which you give them 2 c.c. twice daily – morning and night, or Lickables (2 fingertips full twice a day).

Feeding Instructions:
If you get your terrier puppy at 8 weeks old, they should eat 2x daily for the next 3-4 weeks mixing 1-2 tbsp cottage cheese with 1-2 tbsp of Hill’s a/d canned food.

This mixture happens to be easier on their strengthening teeth, and also gives them good bacteria that they need for their developing immune systems.

* Remember: Your puppy MUST EAT WELL EVERYDAY! If they don’t eat, they will DIE!

If Your Puppy Is Not Eating:

1. Give Vitamins Immediately!

2. Go to the Grocery Store: Buy a carton of RAW CHICKEN LIVERS located in meat department. Boil in water for approximately 20 minutes. Cool for 10-15 minutes. Feed small amounts and DO NOT let puppy over-eat!

3. If Puppy Does Not Eat: Call your Breeder Immediately!

* Remember: Treat your terrier puppy like a new born baby. Do not overhandle them. Puppies should sleep 80% of the time, just like a new born. Let them sleep!

What to Feed Your Terrier Puppy is a post from: Terrier Lover

* Tip: It is of utmost importance to know how many puppies your dog has determined by an ultrasound or x-ray, so that you know if she is in trouble when in labor!!! Have this done around 4 weeks after mating.

1. She will have a discharge (sort of like water breaking).

* Tip: Either prior to this or after, she will be frantically trying to nest. You will notice her very diligently arranging blankets, trying to get under a bed or tearing up paper. So, it is essential that you show her to the whelping box you have already prepared for your dog specifically for this purpose. Otherwise, you’ll have a REAL mess on your hands, and likely some ruined furniture, blankets, carpet or clothing.

2. Within about 2 hrs, she should have delivered her 1st puppy.

* Tip: If no puppy appears within 3 hrs, contact a vet immediately!

3. The period of time between puppies could be up to 2 hrs.

* Tip: Be sure to write down how long she labored with each puppy, and if it is a front birth or breach, and the weight of each dog using a kitchen scale (for smaller measurements). If you know your dog has more puppies to come out, but it has been more than 2 hrs, contact your vet immediately!!!

* Tip: If your dogs are purebred and you have papers documenting that fact from the World Wide Kennel Club or similar entity, they will provide you with forms that you will NEED to fill out in their entirety to be sure the puppies can be registered purebreds too. It could take a few weeks for them to mail them to you, so prepare for this in advance!

4. The mother dog needs to eat the placenta of each puppy, so be sure that a placenta comes out with each puppy. It is your responsibility to make sure this happens! She will likely lick the puppy clean too. If she does not, you will need to gently wipe off each puppy with a warm, damp towel.

5. You will likely need to cut the umbilical cords of each puppy, so use a pair of brand new surgical scissors that you have disinfected with alcohol or peroxide prior to this point.

* Tip: DO NOT cut them any closer than 1″ from the puppy’s skin!

6. The puppies will be hungry, and each puppy needs to have 1 teat/nipple.

* Tip: The teats closer to the dogs armpits, for some reason, are more nourishing. It is important to reserve these teats for the smaller pups or runt of the litter.

* Tip: Do NOT let the puppies just go to whichever teat they feel like. 1 teat/puppy is a strict rule. Why? Because the 1st suckling from each teat is what each dog absolutely needs! DO NOT let a puppy go to 2 teats before each puppy has had their turn at a fresh teat!

7. If your dog is still laboring 1-2 hrs after the last puppy has arrived, call your vet immediately!

8. If your dog is a breed that requires it’s ears or tails docked, such as miniature schnauzers, this needs to be done within the 1st 3 days after birth. Also, it is a good idea to have their dew claws removed as well!

What to Expect With the Birth of Your Puppies is a post from: Terrier Lover

Other than their usual friskiness, you should be taking your dog on daily walks up until the last 3 weeks of the pregnancy.

Now, I don’t mean a marathon, and I don’t mean quickly either. Just a moderate walk for your dog that makes sense.

* Tip: Please put your dog on a leash with a comfortable harness, so that something disastrous doesn’t happen to her or her puppies.

Always be sure to bring along water for them and offer it to them a few times during your trek.

* Tip: Please clean up your feces…It’s so rude not to…Just bring a grocery bag and put your hand inside of it. Pick up the feces and turn it inside out and tie it. Voila…You didn’t even have to touch it or make a fuss!

If you have more than one dog in the house, as we do, and they often get rambunctious with each other, try to minimize this behavior, especially as the dog pregnancy progresses, as it could be harmful to the puppies if they play too rough.

Your dog should be feeling the “effects” of being pregnant, and may not even really feel like playing much, especially if they are feeling nauseated around 3 weeks from morning sickness.

Try to minimize your dog from jumping onto or off of high furniture. Give them a lift if you must. Just be smart!
