Diamond & Kimberly

We adopted a 14-month-old Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle mix “puppy” last week named “Diamond”.

She was my husband’s cousin’s dog, but her life just got a little hectic with a change in work and a newborn baby that she felt she couldn’t give Diamond the attention and care she deserves.

So, she asked us to “babysit” her for a while – I’m sure that she knew we’d fall in love and the rest is history.

Since all of our dogs’ names start with the letter “K”, we slightly renamed her with an official name of “Karat Diamond”, but we still call her Diamond!

With her silky, curly black hair and a white diamond on her chest, it’s a strange result from crossing a Yorkie and a Poodle together. Poodles are often one color and Yorkie’s are always a combination of black and tan or blue and tan.

She’s definitely a terrier, almost resembling a miniature schnauzer in the face, just like our other 3 babies. However, she is also very poodle with her long legs!

Diamond is so playful, as puppies should be and she is a sweet surprise for our terrier-loving household.

She has not yet met her brother and sisters, but she will next week – and I know she’ll be so excited to have so much action going on all the time. Plus, my mother’s 2 terriers will also help with the dog pack babysitting!

I guess my Mom’s “baby”, Precious, won’t be the baby anymore! Even though she’s just over 2 years old, she still acts like and wants to be the BABY!

However, when it comes to puppies, other little animals like our hedgehogs and the like, she likes to take over and herd the rest of our little pack away so she can be in charge and take care of them. Too cute!

Really, I think Diamond and Precious will make a sweet friendship as Diamond really resembles her in the face with her cute, floppy ears, beautiful puppy-dog eyes and similar coloration.

That’s pretty cool, but what is it for?
BringPetsHome.com is a fundraising Web site specifically created to help shelter animals.

As you saw in my last post, we saved a terrier mix dog from an intersection in Dallas, Texas, but the dog didn’t have any identification on it. We couldn’t call an owner or bring the dog home.

We had to bring this baby to a shelter in the hopes that their owner has reported them missing.

So, HomeAgain is encouraging pet owners to be sure to have an ID tag on your pet to prevent this from happening. In the process, when registering with BringPetsHome.com, you’ll be donating to help shelter animals too for their food and medical care.

FYI: The Home Again Web Site has helped recover 500,000 lost pets to their owners. That’s absolutely fantastic, isn’t it?

They do seem to promote microchipping your pets as an identification that can never fall off of a dog or become impossible to read.

I don’t understand why people adopt animals and then ignore them or mistreat them…Just don’t bother adopting one at all…

I have often been told that our dogs receive better treatment than many children…I think they’re right!

As with any of the dog breeds, the perfect situation would be to adopt the pit bull terrier as a puppy, as soon as it is safe to separate the puppy from the mother health-wise, so they can truly bond to you and your family as a unit. This will also ensure that you can socialize the puppy properly around other people, children and animals. It wouldn’t even be a bad idea to meet and visit the puppy before it is separated from it’s mother to start this bond off right.

Pit Bull terrier puppies are very loving, loyal and intelligent, when the time is put in to training your pit bull. Adopting a pit bull into your life can be a very joyful and rewarding experience. Here are some very important facts and suggestions to train your pit bull the right way.

This quote is so true. For many folks, just knowing that your pit bull terrier has been socialized as a puppy by a loving family will ease their mind around the dog…This may alleviate complaints of your puppy and may allow people to be less fearful around your pit bull terrier, which by the way, dogs can sense and could play up on…

People are more apt to want to help you socialize your puppy by petting, holding, snuggling and playing with the Pit Bull Puppies because people are not particularly afraid of puppies…

…Even one of my miniature schnauzers really plays off of people’s fear…She senses a person’s heightened emotion, and herself gets into a heightened mode of protection of our family. It’s basic “fight or flight” instinct.

Puppies, especially breeds known to be somewhat aggressive, should be handled regularly, and should have a caregiver most of the day. Pit bull puppies should be pet and touched all over their faces, ears, feet and belly, so it is not a surprise when a stranger or a veterinarian makes an effort to handle them.

It is also an important exercise to handle their toys and food often, to ensure they are not possessive and get angry or protective of their food and toys. I suggest with more aggressive breeds, to keep food out on a regular basis, instead of scheduled feedings, as this will allow them to feel as though they have no reason to “protect” the food as it is always supplied.

It is very important to make sure your pit bull terrier knows that you are in charge at ALL times! They must obey your commands, so training your pit bull puppy is very important to begin early using rewards for good behavior, and being stern and firm when they do not obey your commands.

It is also important to maintain a hierarchy in the household, as dogs understand this in their packs. You are the master/s, and they must know where they are in the “food chain”, so to speak. Children must be assertive and as the parent of the puppy, you must make it known how important your children and other pets are in the household. Your dog will react accordingly in the chain of command.

I am not even against recommending that you allow your dog to sleep in your room or at the end of the bed with you, so that they know how important they are to you, and they can really bond with you, as they would in their packs.

* Important Note: Many Pit Bull Terrier puppy owners spend the intensive time bonding and training them, as recommended above. This being said, Pit Bull Terriers are especially prone to separation anxiety, as when they grow up, the intensive bonding and training tapers off. They are known to misunderstand this pulling away from them, as people’s lives get busy and feel that their job is mostly done training their pit bull.

If you cannot continue to devote time to this kind of pit bull puppy care, this may not be the right breed of dog for you. Many other terrier breeds are more independent. When adopting a pit bull terrier, know that their average lifespan is 12 years and this is a serious commitment to make, similar to a child.

I hope these tips and tricks on socializing and training a pit bull terrier puppy are helpful and allow you to build a wonderful bond and relationship with your puppy.

However, if you are willing and up to the challenge, sharing your life with a dog is one of the most rewarding relationships you will ever have in your life! Amazing creatures that you will adore and learn from…

Are You Getting A New Dog?

Think about it first.

1) Why do you want a dog? It may be that you have recently lost a dog to illness or old age and she has left a blank space that you need to fill. If your children are now grown up and moved away, it may be that you need a new companion, who will also ensure that you get out and take plenty of exercise.

Perhaps you would like a big dog, to help you feel more secure in your home.These factors will help you to decide what breed of dog will be most suitable and also whether it should be an adult dog or a puppy.

2) You need to decide which breed of dog will suit your situation. There is such an enormous choice among all the different breeds. Will it be a large hound or a small terrier, a German Shepherd or a Bichon Frise? Will the size of the dog and the size of your home be compatible? You may decide not to get a pure bred dog but may find the ideal companion at the local Rescue Centre. This would certainly save you a lot of money.

3) If you decide to get a rescue dog, be aware that it may come with problems from a previous unsuitable owner. On the other hand, such a dog may be so grateful for a happy, loving home that it will turn out to be the ideal companion.

Dog breeders can vary from the superb to the criminal. Some are little more than puppy farms, with unhygienic quarters and indiscriminate breeding. Refer to your local breed society to find a reputable breeder and be sure to check the pedigree of the parents and the Kennel Club registration.

4) Who will train the dog and how? Will you take your dog to training classes, or employ a professional trainer? Are there other members of the family who could share in this necessary exercise. Perhaps you can do it yourself, with the aid of one of the excellent training courses which are available online.You must be prepared to devote time and patience to training your dog, to get the very best from your relationship.

5) Who will take most responsibility for the dog’s welfare? Will it all fall on you? You need to consider feeding, exercise, training and possibly grooming. Can you depend on promises of help from the kids and other members of the family, once the novelty has worn off?

If, on the other hand, you are now living alone, the trust and demands of a new dog in your life could be the very best thing to lighten your days!

6) Separation anxiety can be a big problem for a new puppy or an adult dog. He has suddenly been plunged into a new, strange environment and, in the case of a puppy, been taken away from his mother and siblings.

If the dog is then left alone in the home for long periods of the day, look out! He will be frightened and then bored and may resort to chewing and other destructive behavior, or keep up endless barking or whining, much to the annoyance of neighbors. And you may return home to a disaster zone!

7) Food. In the wild, your dog was a meat eater. Making sure that he gets a suitable diet, with all the correct nutrition is vital to his health and well-being. Just feeding him leftovers from your dinner table is not sufficient. Did you know that garlic and onions can be toxic to dogs?

Several vets and other authoritative sources have issued serious warnings that some commercial dog foods are potentially lethal, as they contain substances which are banned from human consumption. Visit the link at the bottom of this page for the full report.

Consider the cost of owning a dog. For a start, buying a pure bred dog with a good pedigree can be pretty expensive. He will need an initial health check with the vet and possibly you may want to have him micro-chipped. Whilst you are at the vet’s, you may want to get an idea of his normal fees, which should send you looking for pet insurance.

Once you’ve covered all that, there is the continuing cost of food, toys, collars, leashes, training and possibly a crate or kennel.

Get the right dog and he’s worth every penny!
