Typical Health Conditions of the Scottish Terrier

Posted by Kimberly on 8th January 2008

scottishterrier.jpgScotties are by no means an exception to the rule when it comes to the longevity of the terrier breeds…

The Scottish Terrier will typically live between 12 to 14 years.

Being that they are a terrier, they are relatively free of health problems, but if we must discuss them, these are the most prevalent among Scotty illnesses.

Cancer:
Can be a problem in the Scotty dog, most prevalent types being:

1. Bladder cancer, and other transitional cell carcinomas of the lower urinary tract
2. Malignant melanoma
3. Gastric carcinoma
4. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin
5. Lymphosarcoma
6. Nasal carcinoma
7. Mast cell sarcoma
8. Hemangiosarcoma

Von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD):
The Scottish terrier is one of the dog breeds that are prone to carrying a recessive gene that has an inherited disease attached to it, Von Willebrand’s Disease. It is the most common bleeding disorder of man and dogs. There is the chance that your Scotty will be either Read the rest of this entry »

The Cesky Terrier is a Rare & Newer Breed

Posted by Kimberly on 23rd December 2007

ceskyterrier.jpgThe Cesky Terrier, also known as the Bohemian terrier, proves to be somewhat of an elusive and rare breed in North America…In fact, I have never actually seen one in person…

This would probably be because it is a much newer European breed. To be more specific, the Cesky is a Czechoslovakian breed of dog bred by the late Mr. Horak started in 1949.

The origin of the Cesky Terrier is from crossing the Sealyham terrier with the Scottish terrier. The reason? Well, it is said that when hunting, Mr. Horak’s Scotties would get stuck when they would “go to ground”. Being interested in breeding animals from the age of 9, he wanted to create a breed that would not get stuck…

By the 1963, the Cesky was recognized as the newest of dog breeds by the FCI.

Cesky’s come in a variety of 2 colors: Gray & Light Brown…any combination of these is accepted…In fact, there have only been 4 Cesky terriers, total, born that were all Read the rest of this entry »

Keeping Your Yorkshire Terrier Groomed And Pampered

Posted by Kimberly on 6th September 2007

Posters Prints - Dog Yorkshire Terrier Art Poster - Artist: - Poster Size: 16x20The Yorkie is definitely a little fashionista of sorts. Often seen with gorgeous tendrils of silky hair, and rhinestone encrusted collars, these terriers are superstars, if only in their own heads.

The Yorkie, a Small Dog in a Dressy Package
By Michael Russell

Surprisingly, the Yorkshire Terrier, known for its fine “furnishings” and silky long coat, began it’s history as a scrappy rat catcher. Its most likely antecedents are a mixture of various Scottish and Welsh terriers, including the Skye terrier, the Clydesdale terrier and even perhaps the Dandie Dinmont.

Selective breeding through the years miniaturized the Yorkie. It is the second Read the rest of this entry »

Scottish Terrier – The Fearless Soul

Posted by Kimberly on 3rd September 2007

Thomas Fall Posters Prints - Head Study of an Unnamed Scottie with a Floppy Ear. Owner: Cross Art Framed Photographic Print - Artist: Thomas Fall - Poster Size:The Scottish Terrier, nicknamed in 19th Century “little diehard”, is 1 of the 5 breeds that originated from Scotland. It is also known as the Aberdeen Terrier.

Small and resilient, quick and muscular, the Scottish terrier is described as being brave, feisty and fearless. Diggers by nature, Scotties were originally bred to hunt small vermin, squirrels, rats, foxes, and even badgers.

* Tip: When walking your Scottie, please make certain they are on a leash, as they are hunters by nature! They will try to chase anything that moves.

They have a long face and short legs. Their eyes are bright are dark brown, even black, in color. Not only are their eyes bright, but their personality is and everything about them. Their ears and tail stand at attention and they are very alert and intelligent. They have a thick, sturdy tail, as selected when breeding, so that they could be pulled out of holes when digging

Cheryl James Posters Prints - Jenny & Bella Art Photographic Print - Artist: Cheryl James - Poster Size: 20x16Scotties are typically dark gray to black in color. However, they can ALSO come in a wheaten (tan/creme to nearly white) color and brindle! I would love one of each! They are definitely known for their “brick”-shaped cut of their head and their big, fluffy eyebrows, and have a wiry outer coat with a soft and dense undercoat.

Playful, intelligent, loving, loyal, rugged, extremely determined and resilient, Scotties need to have exercise and mental stimulation. Even if you have a small yard, they will be able to occupy themselves, as they love to explore and “secure the area”, so to speak.

On the other hand, they can be stubborn, as they are very self-assured, and they can get into trouble. They will dig, as mentioned earlier and if they find a hole in the fence, they will go hunting and explore. Left unchecked from a puppy, this dog can handle taking over the house in one fell swoop. They will dominate you if you don’t let them know you are in charge. They are born leaders. Be firm, but gentle and you will have a winning relationship with your Scottie.

Scottish terriers are fabulous watchdogs, as they have been bred only to bark when necessary, but they have that alertness, intelligence and fearlessness you are looking for.

They are known to be somewhat aggressive with other dogs, if not socialized early, and are a better dog for older children.

Now, for a little more history on the breed, I found a great article to shed some light on this extensive subject…

Wonderful World of West Highland White Terriers!

Posted by Kimberly on 22nd August 2007

sugar_westie-poo.jpgThe West Highland White Terrier is one of my favorite breeds of terrier. My mother has an 11 yr old Westie-Poo mix (Photo to the left: Sugar), and she is a lovely dog.

Since the Westie is so closely related to the Cairn Terrier, resembling a white Cairn of sorts, I am in love with this breed as well, since I had a Cairn terrier for 18 yrs. The photo below to the right looks so very similar to our Honey it is amazing. This dog is just slightly lighter than our Cairn was.

Both Westies and Cairns have that typical happy-looking “smile” on their face, just like the one the Westie has below… :D

I found a wonderful article to help you decide if you want to adopt a The West Highland White Terrier of your own, or for some more information on your Westies! I hope you find it information and enjoyable to read!

Did Your Black Terrier Turn Platinum?

Posted by Kimberly on 11th August 2007

When we got our little Knosey (right of photo below), she was pitch black. Although she is a miniature schnauzer, she looked like a little Scottish Terrier. This is our Knosey at about 3-4 months old.

new-pics-202.jpg

The breeder told us that she may very well turn platinum. “Platinum?”, we asked. He tried to explain himself, and looking at our little baby, we just couldn’t see that happening. He said that, “Although she is solid black now, because of a couple things I notice in her undercoat, it is possible that she will turn a platinum color. Now, if she turns platinum, she will be very unique and beautiful.” He told us she would look like she is a platinum/silver color. Frankly, just looking at how black she was, we didn’t believe it.

Now, remember, I had a Cock-A-Poo for 18 yrs, and he was black and gradually over many years turned a silver-grey color. This did not happen over the first year he was alive. He was only slightly grey when he was about 7 or 8 yrs old, and he was very silver when he was 18 yrs old. So, I wondered if this wasn’t what the breeder was speaking of.

Here is a photo of Knosey (right hand side below) at about 9 months old and, as you can see, she is still very black in color. However, her chest started to turn slightly platinum/grayish.

puppymugshot.JPG

(This is Kurious, Kaptain & Knosey, our little miniature schnauzers. This photo was taken just before they got their spring haircuts, and just after a good bath. For some reason, they all look like they are in trouble (they don’t love baths). They are too cute to us, and we just couldn’t resist a photo opportunity. We lived in Canada this past winter, and they needed those coats. They look extremely different with their schnauzer cuts. We love the way they look both ways.)

downloaded-june-11-2007-039.jpg

Now, bear in mind that when your little black terrier is ready for their first haircut, they may very well come home from the groomer’s as a platinum dog. Be ready for a huge change. We were flabbergasted when we saw her come out from the groomer’s. We couldn’t stop looking at her! Not only was she not the “chubby” looking, curly-haired puppy we were used to through the winter, she now was a little, grown-up and slick-looking platinum princess. It was such a huge transformation. We were sad and ecstatic all at the same time. We just couldn’t believe it!

Here is a photo the day after Knosey got her Spring haircut. As you can see, she is visibly platinum. She is no longer the little black puppy we adopted. Underneath all of that winter hair, she had turned into a platinum princess!

img_1179.jpg

As you can see in this photo, her legs, chest (and belly) are almost completely whitish platinum. She was just a few days older than 1 yr old. Knosey gets more and more platinum everyday. We have to eat our words. She did turn platinum! Now, we understand what that breeder meant.

knosey-comparison-of-black.JPG

* Check out the final comparison above. On the left, Knosey is 3-4 months old, and on the right, she is 1 yr old.

Everyday, Knosey gets more and more platinum in color. In the sunlight and from a small distance, she looks so similar in color to Kurious, who is greyish silver.

She is very unique and beautiful! We just love her…whether she is black or platinum, or a combination of the two, we are ecstatic to have her as a part of our little family!

We hope you enjoyed this installment of the Terrier Lover blog.
