Scotties are by no means an exception to the rule when it comes to the longevity of the terrier breeds…

The Scottish Terrier will typically live between 12 to 14 years.

Being that they are a terrier, they are relatively free of health problems, but if we must discuss them, these are the most prevalent among Scotty illnesses.

***

Cancer:
Can be a problem in the Scotty dog, most prevalent types being:

1. Bladder cancer, and other transitional cell carcinomas of the lower urinary tract
2. Malignant melanoma
3. Gastric carcinoma
4. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin
5. Lymphosarcoma
6. Nasal carcinoma
7. Mast cell sarcoma
8. Hemangiosarcoma

Von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD):
The Scottish terrier is one of the dog breeds that are prone to carrying a recessive gene that has an inherited disease attached to it, Von Willebrand’s Disease. It is the most common bleeding disorder of man and dogs. There is the chance that your Scotty will be either free of the disease, carriers of the disease or actual “bleeders”.

* Tip: It is very important to acquire your terrier from a reputable breeder that partakes in responsible breeding by having their breeding dogs tested to ensure they don’t even carry this gene.

* Tip: You can have your dog DNA tested to ensure that it’s blood work score is 60 or above. Dogs that score between 50-59 are borderline normal. A score below 50 should draw a huge, red flag.

Craniomandibular Osteopathy (CMO):
This is a developmental disease, which is also known as lion’s jaw, and causes severe bony changes of the mandible and skull before the dog turns 1 year old, when it usually stops and could possibly regress.

This can be very painful, cause eating problems, cause drooling and swelling in the jaw. It could even affect the middle ear.

Scotty Cramp:
This is an autosomal recessive trait in Scottish terriers, and dogs displaying this illness, their parents and siblings should not be bred. It is a neurological disorder typically appearing in Scotties about 6 months old, and could progress as the dog ages. The dog could be running or playing and all of a sudden, they will have stiffened rear legs and an arched back; the dog may even fall over. This could last up to 10 minutes.

It is said that this condition is due to a disorder in seratonin metabolism, which causes a deficiency in the body. Treatments of diazepam, acepromazine or Vitamin E can be used to control symptoms.

Seizures:
The Scottish terrier is one of the dog breeds that can be affected by seizures, which will manifest due to a disturbance of brain function.

The terrier will be affected suddenly and typically lasts about 1 min, but may be longer. Loss of consciousness, muscle stiffening and rigidity of muscles in the limbs and trunk, and falling to the floor constitute a seizure. This muscle stiffening will alternate with violent running motions, along with possible biting movements and salivation.

There will be spontaneous recovery, but the dog may have some brief disorientation.

You should alert your veterinarian about the seizures and they will be able to prescribe an anti-convulsion medication, which should control this condition.

Most Scotties afflicted with seizures will live a “normal” life, and there is no research that proves that the seizures are painful to the animal. It is more of a scary event for the owner than anything, as the dogs seem to be unaffected after seizure.

* Bear in mind that Scottish terriers are, on average, very healthy dogs. These are just some of the illnesses that are most prevalent among Scotties that do have health conditions.

Diamond in the “Ruff” — Meet The Cairn Terrier Dog
By Blake Kritzberg

The Cairn terrier hails from Scotland, as do its close and outstanding relatives, the Scottish terrier and the West Highland terrier. Much like another cousin, the Welsh terrier, the Cairn is probably an underappreciated breed in the United States, while it remains wildly popular in the old country. But its relative dark horse status is likely just fine with serious Cairn fans.

Unlike several fancier strains of terrier, the Cairn has never been subjected to uptown clips and beauteous barbering, like the Kerry or the Wire terrier. As a result, the Cairn can look pretty shaggy in comparison, and resembles the working dog he was born and bred to be. Cairns, after all, were named after the cairns or piled stones in the Scottish Highlands they so often set themselves to digging through, looking for rats. The Cairn was a fearless hunter of vermin and rouster of foxes, with strong claws, teeth, and an absolutely nonnegotiable hunting instinct. He is not the type of dog you can set loose in the park.

The Cairn terrier is a convenient size for most modern families, weighing only about 13 or 14 pounds. He is tough and resilient, and has a genuine liking for children, although you’ll still need to make sure that they treat him gently, like any other dog. The Cairn is a cheerfully independent type with an incredibly sharp brain. You’ll want to give him some interesting jobs around the house and make sure he stays as challenged as possible (otherwise, he’s more than likely to challenge your flower beds). Even though many modern small dogs essentially end up as lapdogs, the Cairn has the smarts and the perseverance to be much more.

Despite his shaggy locks, some terrier lovers find a unique and rustic beauty in this breed. If you want an active, enthusiastic, tough little terrier companion, the Cairn deserves your serious consideration.

Cairns come in almost all colors — anything but white conforms to type. Anyone wanting to add a small, sharp and very affectionate dog to their family unit would do well to consider the long-lived Cairn.

The Dandie Dinmont: a “Little Big Dog”
By Michael Russell

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is the only breed which takes its name from a fictional character in a book. In the novel written by Sir Walter Scott “Guy Mannering”, there is a farmer by the name of Dandie Dinmont who owns several of these terriers of the variety bred in old Northumberland in England. From this novel came the name “Dandie Dinmont” to designate this terrier. These little dogs were a hunting terrier with quite a reputation for scrappiness and bravery in the hunt. They were known before the publication of the novel by Sir Walter Scott as the “mustard and pepper” terriers. Historically, in England and Scotland, terriers who were owned by individual farmers were often called by the name of the farmer himself. In this particular part of England where these terriers originated, if there was no “farmer name” then the “mustard and pepper” dog was the description. The name described a specific Terrier which was a very highly prized type of terrier, known to posses superior hunting ability. The breed was well known in both England and Scotland and Sir Walter Scott himself kept a number of these little dogs. As early as 1875 the first Dandie Dinmont Fancier club was formed.

The breed is a “big little dog” (quotation from Sir Walter Scott). He is 18-24 pounds, longer than he is tall. The head features a topknot with pendulous ears covered with shorter hair and a pom pom of some length at the bottom. Coat is “salt and pepper” and typically wiry in nature, as with most of the Terrier breeds this is a coat that must be “stripped” as the dead hairs will not shed normally. The Dandie Dinmont is a “digging” terrier that will go to ground, having larger feet in the front is characteristic of this breed. The tail should be carried jauntily above the level of the back and is never docked. The two colors of this dog can be either the Mustard ( a pale fawn to tan, with the topknot being creamy) or the Pepper, (steel blue with a silvery topknot) Expressive and large, the Dandie’s eyes can melt the heart of the most hardened soul.

This little Terrier has the courage of a lion and can get into serious arguments with larger creatures, even the Otter or Badger. They are a tough fighter but also a highly intelligent dog that is loyal and affectionate with its owner. They do not accept harsh training methods, as they are not overly strong willed and are quite willing to serve their human companion. They do have a strong terrier drive and instinct, a person who owns a Dandie does not have to worry about vermin or rodents on his property.

The Dandie Dinmont suffers from relatively few heritable conditions. The length of the back does make this dog susceptible to disc disease. It is wise to keep this dog lean to avoid any problems. Dandies appear to be quite tolerant of pain, this is probably due to their scrappy nature. Dandie owners are aware of this and pay careful attention to their dog, since they will not “tell you” as obviously as other breeds might, when they are hurting.

It is also known as the Aberdeen Terrier.

Small and resilient, quick and muscular, the Scottish terrier is described as being brave, feisty and fearless. Diggers by nature, Scotties were originally bred to hunt small vermin, squirrels, rats, foxes, and even badgers.

* Tip: When walking your Scottie, please make certain they are on a leash, as they are hunters by nature! They will try to chase anything that moves.

They have a long face and short legs. Their eyes are bright are dark brown, even black, in color. Not only are their eyes bright, but their personality is and everything about them. Their ears and tail stand at attention and they are very alert and intelligent. They have a thick, sturdy tail, as selected when breeding, so that they could be pulled out of holes when digging

Scotties are typically dark gray to black in color. However, they can ALSO come in a wheaten (tan/creme to nearly white) color and brindle! I would love one of each! They are definitely known for their “brick”-shaped cut of their head and their big, fluffy eyebrows, and have a wiry outer coat with a soft and dense undercoat.

Playful, intelligent, loving, loyal, rugged, extremely determined and resilient, Scotties need to have exercise and mental stimulation. Even if you have a small yard, they will be able to occupy themselves, as they love to explore and “secure the area”, so to speak.

On the other hand, they can be stubborn, as they are very self-assured, and they can get into trouble. They will dig, as mentioned earlier and if they find a hole in the fence, they will go hunting and explore. Left unchecked from a puppy, this dog can handle taking over the house in one fell swoop. They will dominate you if you don’t let them know you are in charge. They are born leaders. Be firm, but gentle and you will have a winning relationship with your Scottie.

Scottish terriers are fabulous watchdogs, as they have been bred only to bark when necessary, but they have that alertness, intelligence and fearlessness you are looking for.

They are known to be somewhat aggressive with other dogs, if not socialized early, and are a better dog for older children.

Now, for a little more history on the breed, I found a great article to shed some light on this extensive subject…

***

Scottish Terrier Dogs – Important Facts You Should Know
By Jeff Cuckson

Scottish Terriers are short-legged dogs, at a height of ten to eleven inches, comparatively heavy-boned, yet deceivingly trim. They are agile and sporty pets. Moreover, their intelligence, playfulness and loyalty make them popular pets.

Historically, they were the first standard for their breed, back in 1880. So even today, when someone says Terrier, what comes to mind is the Scottish Terrier.

This breed originated in Scotland and is ubiquitously recognized as an icon of the Scottish Culture. Still, even if they have long history, it was only in the 1800s, that their history began to be recorded. Many Scottish Terrier owners insist that all other terriers share a common ancestor in the Scottish Terrier dog.

They were originally bred to hunt foxes and badgers. Although for many Americans, their first sight of a Scottish Terrier was through President Roosevelt’s pet, Fala, this breed had been in the country since the late 18th century. In fact, the first registered Scottie America was ”Dake” born Sept. 15, 1884.

Physically the average Scottish Terrier weighs 19-23 pounds in adulthood and lives a life span of 12-15 years. They come in most any shades and colors such as black, wheaten, or brown. They don’t shed a lot of hair. Ideally, you should comb and evenly trim his coat regularly to keep the coat neat and shiny.

How does one take good care of a Scottish Terrier dog? Not to worry, they may be sporty; yet don’t require a lot of exercise. You can keep your Scottish Terrier dog indoors, provided you ensure it gets sufficient walking exercises during the day. If you have a small yard, and it is well secured, then let your dog loose. He’ll be sure to get his optimum requirement by playing in the yard. As pets, they are better pets for older and more mature children.

You should follow the basics for taking care of Scottish Terrier dogs. They are, however susceptible to the following diseases such as Canine von Willebrand’s disease, Scottie Cramp, flea allergy, intervertebral disc diseases, as well as other disorders.

A sage advice for those wanting to join the ranks of Scottish Terriers Dogs owners: give your pet affection and praise. You’ll get it back from your pet, manifold.

Just to name a few: Franklin D. Roosevelt, George W. Bush (x 2), Humphrey Bogart, Shirley Temple, Liza Minnelli, Queen Victoria, Ronald Regan…Funny how great leaders pick this breed, as the Scottish terrier, as I mentioned at the beginning, are natural born leaders themselves.

Plus, many companies choose a Scottish terrier as their mascot or for their logo. Hey, when you play Monopoly, do you choose to be the Scottie every single time like I do?

It’s so hard to pick favorites when it comes to terriers because they are all similar in many ways, and too cute! However, I think I can definitely say that the Scottish Terrier is up on the top of my list!

The photo below to the right looks so very similar to our Honey it is amazing. This dog is just slightly lighter than our Cairn was.

Both Westies and Cairns have that typical happy-looking “smile” on their face, just like the one the Westie has below…

By Jeff Cuckson

West Highland White Terriers are furry coated dogs, with dots for coal black eyes and button noses.

Why are West Highland White Terrier puppies sought after by many dog lovers? Because these friendly creatures are well-behaved, loyal and affectionate dogs, who may be pocket sized (average a 10-11 inches tall), but are highly intelligent animals.

You won’t have a hard time training these dogs, whether solely as house pets, or for show. Their keen intelligence makes it seem like play. However, they learn better and best to training sessions that are done on a schedule.

Brush their white coats two to three times a week, to keep it shiny and clean. If you do intend to enter them for competition, make sure your pet is regularly trimmed, plucked and stripped of his or her coat.

A West Highland white terrier lives an average of 15+ years, and usually has a litter of two to five puppies.

What is the history behind the West Highland White Terrier breed? This breed originated in Scotland developed in the high mountains of West Scotland, to hunt vermin. They claim a common ancestry to the Scotch Terrier.

References to the existence of the West Highland White Terrier can be seen as early as the 18th century, like one painting done by Sir Edwin Landseer. The piece entitled “The Breakfast Party” clearly features the West Highland Terriers.

Another name of the West Highland White Terrier, is as the Poltalloch terrier. The name refers to the home of Col. E.D. Malkolm, the first breeder of these breed. In 1907, the breed then registered as the Roseneath terrier, little Skye and Cairn. Then in 1909, AKC officially changed the breed’s name to what it is known as today, West Highland White Terrier breed.

In the past West Highland White Terriers, were considered to belong to the one breed, with Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Cairn and Scottish Terriers. However, although they share common ancestors, selective breeding resulted in the differences between their coat type and colors.

A surprising fact about this breed is, given that the West Highland White Terrier was originally bred to traipse the steep and rugged mountain sides, Westies are well adjusted to today’s living conditions. As long as they are walked several times a day, they are good apartment dwellers.

It’s not that hard to see then that the West Highland White Terrier definitely qualifies as one of man’s best friends.
