I was doing a little reading on my friend’s blog, BigPawBlog.com (cool spot), and wanted to share some of the terriers that are a part of the Working Group, according to the AKC and other kennel clubs.
Dog shows have so many groupings, that it can be difficult to keep all of the dogs straight…
Contrary to popular belief, not all of the terriers are in the “Terrier Group”. There are 27 breeds in the Terrier Group itself, according to the AKC.
Some are in the Toy Group (Australian Silky, English Toy or Black & Tan, Maltese, Manchester, Yorkshire, Toy Fox, sometimes Tibetan or Boston depending upon the kennel club), and some in the Non-Sporting Group (Boston, Tibetan depending on the kennel club).
There are 4 terriers in the Working Group.
Terriers in the Working Group:
1. Black Russian Terrier
2. Giant Schnauzer
3. Standard Schnauzer
4. Miniature Schnauzer (depending on the kennel club)
The fact that they are in the Working Group simply means that they are purebred dogs that were specifically bred to help assist humans with different types of work.
These types of Work may include:

The Black Russian Terrier is absolutely on of my very favorite terrier breeds! Top 3 I would have to say! They are beautiful, strong, intelligent, athletic, courageous, and tender.
There are many other names for this breed: Black Terrier, Chiorny Terrier, Chornyi, Russian Bear Schnauzer, Russian Black Terrier…
…But one thing remains the same…They win 1st prize for being a well-rounded breed! A companion, worker, herder, hunter, protector…the list goes on and on…
They were originally bred to be guard and police dogs, but with it’s extreme affinity for people, it is a wonderful companion dog through-and-through.

The Black Russian Terrier
By Michael Russell
The Black Russian Terrier is a breed that was “engineered” by the Russians shortly after world War II for the specific purpose of producing a strong, fearless and hardy working dog that could withstand the rigors of the cold Russian winter and would be a strong and formidable protector. The “Red Star” kennels, a state owned and operated kennel, was the name of the government kennel of the Soviet Union whose function was to produce the necessary dogs needed for the military and other important functions. The rat terrier is a famed farm helper and companion. As their name implies, they were excellent ratters on farms and made fantastic hunting companions.
They are a more rare breed today because the breed died out quite a bit due to the invention of pesticides in the 20s – 40s used on farms.
They are often mistaken for a Jack Russell Terrier, although they never have a wiry coat, they are finer boned, have a more refined head, and are considerably less aggressive.
All-in-all, they are typical terriers, loving to explore and tear around the yard, but they also love to lounge around with their owners.
