So, I thought I would shed some light on the Norwich Terrier today to help you distinguish between the two, and decide for yourself, which is the right terrier breed for you, if you are making the decision between the Norfolk and the Norwich!

From what I can gather, these 2 separate breeds are closely related. There is a drop-eared, and a prick-eared type of this dog. The “drop-eared” variety was recognized as the Norfolk terrier in 1964.

Breeders used to have drop-eared dogs cropped, until it was illegal to do so. In the 1930s, breeders concentrated their efforts to distinguish between these 2 breeds.

The Norwich Terrier is thought to be a descendant of the Irish terrier, and was previously known as the Jones Terrier, and the Cantab Terrier…

Here is some more great information on the Norwich Terrier…

***

Norwich Terrier Puppy And Dog Information
By Mitch Endick

The Norwich Terrier is an active breed that can live in an apartment as long as she can look forward to frequent walks. A properly fenced in yard would be ideal for exercise but she is a digger and will take off once loose, for adventures. They generally do well with other pets and love considerate children and their toys. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Norwich Terrier is about 10 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 10 to 12 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Norwich Terrier is no exception. Although considered a hardy and long lived breed, be on the look out for genetic eye disease, back problems and dry skin if kept indoors.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Norwich Terrier has a wiry, straight, hard, medium length, close to the body coat with an undercoat that sheds lightly. She should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.

Life Span

The Norwich Terrier can live between 12 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

The Norwich Terrier comes from England where it was a ratter and farm dog. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1936.

Norfolk Terriers are just adorable little dogs thought to have been developed by crossing Cairn terriers and Irish terriers.
Firstly, they were called the Cantab Terrier, later the Trumpington terrier, now the Norfolk terrier.
Great natured terriers great for families and singles alike!

The Norfolk Terrier
By Nikki Carroll

The Norfolk terrier, a breed only recently recognized, originated from Norfolk. They are most commonly mistaken for their close contemporary, the Norwich Terriers. Although they separated as late as 1964, they have many distinct differences. Besides the simple difference in size and their ears, the Norfolk terrier suffers from jealousy mush easier that the Norwich terrier. The Norwich Terriers also tend to adapt to urban life easier, but the Norfolk terrier can still be a man or woman’s best friend.

The Norfolk terrier is know to be an affectionate well natured puppy but can also be a bit stubborn. Because of this, many experts agree that the best way to train these adorable pups is with crate training. They should be placed in the crate when left unattended or unsupervised. This will not only reassure your pet and when used wisely the crate should become a comfortable crate when you little one grows up.

They are relatively easy to maintain. They don’t actually shed fur naturally. This can have its pros and cons. On the plus side, you don’t have to worry about fur all over your furniture and floors like with a Labrador retriever or German Sheppard. On the other hand, you will need to take man’s best friend to the groomer twice a year to strip their coat. In addition, you will also need to brush your Norfolk terrier’s coat at least twice a day to prevent tangles and uncomfortable matting.

Due to their high energy this pooch will thrive in a home with a large fenced yard to play in. Boredom tends to make these clever canines destructive so small urban dwellings are a recipe for disaster. They also make great family pets and are great around children. The Norfolk terrier can be a great addition to any family as long as they are fully educated about the breed.

Nikki Carroll is a proud mother, wife and co-owner of http://www.littlepamperedpets.com where you can find a great selection of Dog Clothes to fit any canine breed whether is a Chihuahua, Yorkie, Maltese or even a Boxer.
