Do you have canned food, bottled water, candles, a generator?

Even fewer people think of stocking up on Pet Supplies in case of an emergency.

I don’t mean just a bag of dog food or some canned wet food either…

K-9 First Aid Kit

…I mean supplies for dog safety like first aid kits, a portable dog bowl, and a dog shelter or kennel to keep them safe, if something ever happened too.

Be sure your animals have tags on a collar or harness, so people will know where to return them to or call if they get lost. Know where your leash is at all times!

Blinking Pet Safety Light

Have you seen those blinking dog safety lights for their collars, dog safety coats or even your own jacket? You can see them up to a half mile away, so it’s safer for your dog around traffic or when you’re out in the dark with them. Many are water proof as well!

We even have dog booties for all 5 of our family’s dogs, just in case they have to walk over tough terrain.

Maltese Terrier In Dog Carrier

If you have a small terrier dog, then do you have a dog carrier handy?

Now, this holds true across the board when it comes to different pets and their pet supplies.

Do you have a dog first aid kit, or any first aid kit for that matter, in all your vehicles that you travel in with your animals?

It’s better to be safe than sorry when traveling with your dog. The thing is, a car accident is never expected – that’s why it’s an accident.

You never know, there may be a day where these sorts of pet supplies will save your beloved terrier’s life (or your own life).

I chatted yesterday with a friend of mine from high school asking for advice about her 9 month old cock-a-poo pup.

Apparently, he gets aggressive when he has a treat, a toy, a bone or his food. He growls and threatens to bite when you get near him.

* Honestly: We must be doing something correctly – our dogs never give us aggressive behavior when it comes to their toys, treats or food. We could put our face in theirs when playing and take the item away without a 2nd thought or any negative reaction from them whatsoever. I never fear grabbing something from them, no matter how fabulous it is to them, even a bone. The same goes for any child or baby that is around them. We’ve never had a problem…

There could be 2 Reasons for this behavior in a puppy, in my opinion.

1. He’s afraid you’ll take it away – Why would he feel like that? Well, if you put food out in intervals for your dog and then take away the bowl in between, or if they don’t feel like they get enough food, they may have this behavior when you approach him at this time.

Maybe you or your child will tease them with the toy and never let them get it back when playing, this could create this sense of protective behavior over their toys. Puppies need time to play with their toys and to attain the toy when you’re playing tug of war or throwing it to them - i.e. don’t always pretend to throw the toy for them – actually throw it!

Photo left: Our Kurious Kissyface as a 3 month old puppy playing with her boney.

2. He doesn’t respect you & thinks he’s in charge – If your puppy or dog is aggressive towards you at all, they feel they’re in charge, and have no problem showing you.

What To Do:
1. Reassess the amount of food you’re giving your dog. Also, consider leaving the bowl out for them during the day with food in it. They may not feel so anxious and aggressive in protecting the food that’s always out there.

Some dogs overeat and will eat and eat themselves until they are sick. I’ve never heard of a terrier that’s very prone to this. Typically, dogs know when to stop. They’ll snack throughout the day and usually wait until after your meals (mostly to see if they’ll get some of what you’re eating) to eat more substantially.

We always leave a bowl of food out for the dogs and we’ve never had a problem with an overeater.

2. Make sure they know who is in charge! I always look to the elder dogs in a pack for guidance on how to deal with a puppy.

When a puppy is doing something bad, wrong, inappropriate or irritating, what does the mommy dog do?
She’ll give a quick snarl, maybe a frightning snap to scare them (like how he’s trying to scare you), and if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to do all 3 and grab them quickly and firmly by the scruff of their necks.

That should shock them enough to get their attention, show them you’re in charge and mean business, and embarrass them a bit.

You sternly tell them no while looking into their eyes. Then, you take the bone away. Try it again later or another day.

I know it sounds silly, but you are their doggy mommy, daddy and family. Treat them as they would be treated in the pack – they’re the real experts!

You may feel silly growling, snarling or what have you, but I can attest that this works – they’ll respect you for it!

* Don’t Forget – What a Puppy Learns, They’ll Do Their Whole Lives…

…If you don’t want them to be aggressive, you MUST teach them early on!!!

* Thanks to Melissa for talking with me about this problem with her puppy.

The American Humane Association is supported by HomeAgain by donating $1 for every single pet registered to BringPetsHome.com program during Be Kind to Animals Week.

That’s pretty cool, but what is it for?
BringPetsHome.com is a fundraising Web site specifically created to help shelter animals.

As you saw in my last post, we saved a terrier mix dog from an intersection in Dallas, Texas, but the dog didn’t have any identification on it. We couldn’t call an owner or bring the dog home.

We had to bring this baby to a shelter in the hopes that their owner has reported them missing.

So, HomeAgain is encouraging pet owners to be sure to have an ID tag on your pet to prevent this from happening. In the process, when registering with BringPetsHome.com, you’ll be donating to help shelter animals too for their food and medical care.

Also, when you purchase anything online from the retailers listed on that site, such as WalMart, Office Depot, Macy’s, Amazon, etc, a percentage of your purchase will be donated by the retailers to this cause, at no extra cost to you. How awesome is that?

FYI: The Home Again Web Site has helped recover 500,000 lost pets to their owners. That’s absolutely fantastic, isn’t it?

They do seem to promote microchipping your pets as an identification that can never fall off of a dog or become impossible to read.

***

I hope you find this Terrier Rescue post informative on Terrier Lover! Until next time…

On the way home from church today in Dallas, we came to a busy intersection and what do I see?

I see a poor, little terrier mix dog confused and scared trying to make it through the cars.

What Did I Do?
In my church dress and high heels, I ran out to get the dog to safety on the sidewalk.

She was frightened, but glad at the same time that someone helped her out. She rolled over on her back with her belly to me, hoping I wouldn’t hurt her.

Well, she certainly came across the right person then!

She had no tag, she had mats in her hair and was full of burrs and was dirty too.

I ran back to the vehicle with her where my husband, with an understanding look on his face, started to scan the immediate area, as we drove around, trying to see if someone was looking for her, in case she just ran out of a yard or something.

The problem was that we were in an industrial area and there weren’t any houses and no one searching for a lost pet.

So, we went to the closest animal shelter, but it is Sunday and they’re not open. So, we called the number provided and a person called us to come collect her and see if she had a chip or could be reunited with an owner that reported her missing.

She was so sweet and very happy to give me a good cuddle for 2 hrs. While we waited, we gave her some food and water, as she was clearly hungry and very thirsty.

What a sweetheart – I think she was a bit older too.

She looked like she was mixed with a Yorkshire terrier or similar black & tan terrier and maybe a Schnauzer or a Poodle.

If you’re looking for this dog, she was found at the intersection of Plano Rd. & Forest Ln. in Garland, Texas (suburb of Dallas).

She has a partially cleft nose and her right ear missing, but you wouldn’t really know it unless you had a good look.

Please contact Garland Animal Services to reconnect with her.

She is such a sweet soul! I would miss her terribly if she went missing from our home – I fell in love with her immediately!

It could very well be that she got lost because of the terrible thunderstorms we had last night that knocked down numerous fences in our area…Poor baby!

Who knows, thunder and lightning used to scare one of our dogs until they were so fearful, they’d run and hide anywhere.

* PLEASE: Keep a collar and tags on your dog! We could have simply drove her home. Thank God we found her before she got injured out there!

I hope she found her way back to her owner’s loving arms! I would be going absolutely crazy without her!

If this is your dog – you are truly blessed to have her in your life – she is an ANGEL!

Very well behaved, so gentle and just as sweet as pie!

She seemed to be really exhausted from her ordeal, as she snuggled up into my arms and had a good, little rest.

I’m so glad she let me pick her up and trusted me that I was going to help her. Animals are so smart, aren’t they?

***

I hope you can help this Yorkshire Terrier Cross find her way home on Terrier Lover! Until next time…

Personally, I think it would be ignorant to say that dogs don’t dream when they sleep. This person is someone who has never had the opportunity to watch dogs sleep.

My dogs must have some amazing dreams, hopefully not nightmares, because they kick their feet like they’re running at times, they are barking with their mouths closed, and are twitching all over the place. It is clearly REM sleep.

I’m sure that some dreams consist of eating mommy’s steak, or running through beautiful fields chasing rabbits, cats or squirrels.

They probably dream of huge boneys, swimming in the lake, and cuddling up to mommy in the bed with all of their toys strewn about on the bed…LOL

Now, they couldn’t be all good dreams either…There are times that they are clearly in distress, just like a human…they have a real bark, growl or whine and cry.

I wonder if another dog is invading their territory, they’re dreaming of a stranger breaking into the house, or their mommy and daddy leaving them somewhere…I wonder if they have fights with other dogs???

* Tip: When I see them having a nightmare, I gently talk to them and pet them until they wake up. Be sure to completely wake them up though because, just like us, they can fall right back into a dream.

***

I posted about this amazing service I found online this week that proactively helps you find your lost or stolen pets by actually calling your neighbors and alerting them to the fact that your animal is lost or stolen.

It’s like an Amber Alert for your pets! Also, this service is a National Do Not Call Registry exempt organization…So, your message will get out to everyone!

This was too valuable information not to share on this blog too, as I know I would be completely devastated if anything ever happened to my darlings…So, please go check out the post and bookmark the site for future reference.

Have You Lost A Pet? Here’s a Site To Help You Find Them!

Also, keep in mind, if you find someone’s animal that was lost, you can also use this service to help track down their owners.

***

I hope you find this Terrier Safety post helpful and information! Again, please bookmark this service for future reference. Until next time…

Love Your Terrier,

Terrier Newsflash:

I “stumbled upon” this story a few weeks ago, and it has bothered me since I read it…I just had to post about it!

Basically, the short version of the story is that a family brought their Yorkshire Terrier – Shih Tzu cross, who was about 4 months old, in to a Petco in Los Gatos, California to be groomed on March 22nd, 2008.

Just 8 hours later, Hurley was dead.

4 hours after dropping Hurley off for grooming, his parents came to pick him up, and Hurley was panting and breathing with some difficulty…but employees ensured them that everything went fine…

Being only 4 months old, Hurley’s parents suspected that Hurley was just a little stressed out from the new surroundings.

2 hours later, his breathing was even more taxed and he started to cough up blood. Yikes!

Immediately, Hurley was rushed to their local animal emergency hospital, where vets worked quickly and laboriously on the dog, whose heart stopped and was resuscitated twice. His lungs were filling up with fluid and he was literally drowning to death.

His loving family had to make that heart-wrenching decision to euthanize Hurley so that he did not have to suffer any more.

Needless to say, THEY WANT ANSWERS!

The 2 emergency room vets concluded that Hurley’s death was due to strangulation…Strange for a healthy dog that had the regular check-ups and all vaccinations on the schedule, passing with flying colors.

Hurley’s regular veterinarian suspects that there was cruelty and/or negligence on Petco’s part and even filed a complaint report with Animal Control, which Hurley’s parents also did to the Los Gatos Police Department.

The thing is, Petco has, in their possession, a tape of what happened in their grooming facilities, which neither Petco, nor their insurance company, will show or comment on regarding the injury that occurred that day. However, they are willing, even without a request, to pay for any and all emergency vet bills. Strange, you may say…

As Hurley’s parents searched for answers, they also uncovered a long history of documented complaints and cases against Petco for animal injuries, abuse, neglect and suffering…

To see more about these animal complaints against Petco, and more about Hurley’s cause, check out the post @:

What Could You Do To Protect Your Pet?

1. Make sure you take your pet to be groomed at a reputable groomer, for which you have received a referral from someone you know.

2. At many Petcos or Petceteras, etc, they usually have a viewing window, through which you can observe everything going on with your precious pet. People are less likely to be careless while being watched…If you have the time, I suggest this is a great option.

3. Learn how to groom your own pet at home…Not only will this save you $$$ over the long run, but it will create a bond between you and your pet. Also, you’ll only get better at it over time.

* Many terriers are groomed very similarly, and I recently posted about How to Groom a Welsh Terrier step-by-step…Check it out here:

Maltese Training: How To Stop Your Maltese From Chewing
By Alvin Toh

Chewing is a common problem in all dogs. Your Maltese is chewing because he may be bored, lonely or stressed. If you have a Maltese puppy that chews, he could be teething.

Here are some training tips on how to stop your Maltese from chewing.

1. If chewing is a problem for your Maltese, keep him in a restricted area when not under your supervision. If you are not able to keep an eye on your dog, place him in a crate and provide him with chew toys. Do not let him roam freely in your house until he’s been trained not to chew.

2. Use deterrents such as bitter spray or cayenne pepper on table legs, wooden furniture and carpet to discourage your Maltese from chewing. They are ideal for items that you cannot keep out of reach from your dog. You will still need to provide toys for your dog to chew. Do not give an old shoe or furniture. Otherwise, your dog may think that it is ok to chew on similar items.

3. When you catch your Maltese chewing, tell him ‘NO’ firmly and give him a chew toy instead. Praise him enthusiastically when he chews on the toy. You must only correct him when you catch him in the act.

4. Give your Maltese a variety of chew toys to keep him occupied. Each week, alternate his toys so he has something different to play with.

5. If your Maltese is chewing because he is bored or lonely, make sure he gets plenty of physical and mental exercise. You are more likely to have a well-behaved, healthy and happy dog. Bring him for a long walk, a run or play with him. In addition to obedience and behaviour training, teach your dog new tricks. He enjoys learning them if you praise or reward him with his favourite treats. Exercise can also help to relieve tension and overcome boredom in your dog, thereby preventing most behaviour problems.

6. If you take time to puppy proof your home, there is less chance of your Maltese finding valuable things to chew. Keep hazardous items such as electric cords, chemicals, sharp objects and poisonous house plants out of reach from your dog. Besides training your Maltese to stop chewing, you are also preventing potential accidents from happening to him.

It takes time, patience and consistency to train your Maltese from chewing. If you find a method that works, apply it consistently in your Maltese training. If none of the above methods work, you may want to consider using an anti-bark collar.

Reported today from Evanston, Illinois: Zoe, a blind and nearly deaf, elderly Boston Terrier survives being missing for 13 days…But this isn’t the worst part!

She fell into a 6′ window well, and was left for dead. 13 days after going missing, a gardener notices her still body in that widow well only 40′ from the owner’s house, and thought she was surely dead. However, Zoe moved and was still fighting for her life.

In that 13 days, she had lost 1/2 of her body weight…nearly 6 lbs!

Zoe’s owner is ecstatic and relieved to find her baby alive and in fairly good condition, after shelters told her the Boston Terrier probably would be dead after being missing 1 wk.

Praise the Lord, and Bless her little soul! Zoe is a 12-yr old Boston Terrier that has lost 1 eye to glaucoma, and has cataracts in the other. What a miracle she survived!

To read more on this story: Elderly, blind dog survives disappearance

Unbelievable story of the terrier spirit! They are fighters and are rugged creatures. I’m sure this owner’s heart is eased, and she couldn’t be more relieved and grateful that her Zoe is alive and home, safe and sound!

* Tip (Learned The Hard Way From Many A Terrier Owner): Ensure your terrier is safe and sound, enclosed in a secure fence with latched gates every time they are outside and loose. Always keep your terrier on a leash when outside of fenced areas.

However, this native breed of Wales soon rose to become a show dog. Breeders attempted to outdo each other by developing the Welsh terrier dogs’ wiry coats and coloration.

It is believed that the Welsh Terrier originates from the Old English Black and Tan Terrier. In fact, until 1900, the Welsh Terrier was called the “Old English Terrier” or the “Black and Tan Rough-Haired Terrier”. As the latter name implies, this terrier is black and tan in color.

People often take a Welsh terrier as a pet because it is one of the most mild-mannered of the terriers, but extremely intelligent and feisty as well.

Affectionately called the “Welshie”, this terrier breed has a a typical brick-shaped face, like the Airedale and the Schnauzer. It needs exercise and much mental stimulation in order to continue to be agreeable. With an idle mind, Welshies will figure out a way to get into mischief.

Although they are mild-mannered, even the most die-hard terrier fan can have fun with this breed because the Welsh terrier loves to play, and is a great companion dog because of this fact.

It is important to socialize the dog at an early age as this will help the dog be friendlier towards humans and other animals. It is a great terrier for children, but children should be supervised that they are not too aggressive toward this small terrier, as they could injure the dog. They love children and will gladly follow them around while they play.

The Welsh terrier can be trained in a number of different ways. An owner should be gentle with the dog, but still firm so as to make sure the dog knows who is in charge. This is a very agile breed, and loves to play and perform for their owners. Try a frisbee with them…they’ll love it!

A Welsh terrier’s hair should be brushed at least once a week in order to remove dead or loose hair, and will encourage a healthy coat. Although regular bathing is not really required, it is advisable that you wipe off dust and dirt from your dog regularly using a damp washcloth.

Because this is a terrier, it is advisable that a Welsh terrier be kept in a fenced in yard, as they will wander and explore, especially if they see other dogs, cats, birds or squirrels, even if they see dry leaves rustling in the wind. Protect them from danger, and yourself from heartache if something should happen while they are off exploring.

However, don’t leave them alone for too long in a fenced yard because they will become bored, and start digging under the fence or pulling out plants, chasing bees or mice, and have even been known to scale fences and escape.

Welsh terriers are known for their awesome jumping ability, mostly due to their longish legs.

A healthy Welshie will live about 15 yrs, and there are no known defects of this breed.

Knowing more about your pet will help you have a closer relationship with your terrier.

I hope you enjoyed today’s installment of Terrier Lover. Until next time…
