Cairn Terriers That Need Your Help!

Posted by Kimberly on 31st December 2007

One of my good friends, Deirdre, on Facebook emailed me this tonight, and I needed to share it with you quickly…

Read on to save Cairn Terriers in Need…

honey-bunny.JPG“I have some close friends that volunteer for the CP Cairn Rescue group. They are hard working individuals that go to puppy mills and auctions and take as many of the dogs as they can and place them in safe homes. This takes a lot of money … especially since almost all of the dogs required alot of medical treatment when they are rescued.

This group is currently involved in a ‘contest’ for donations. The group that receives the most number of donations (not the overall dollar amount) will have Yahoo match the donations. They reeeeeeally need the money in order to continue saving these dogs from a life of cruelty and suffering. PLEASE – the minimum donation is $10.00 (and is tax deductable) and the contest ends TOMORROW! Please, please, please give! They are currently in 2nd place … but only by a few donations.

Follow this link and donate to CP Cairn Rescue Group:

Thee Cairn Terrier – A Diamond In The Ruff

Posted by Kimberly on 23rd December 2007

honey-bunny.JPGWhen you speak of a Cairn Terrier, you can’t say “the”…it must be “Thee”! They almost seem to be a regal terrier in personality.

We had the blessing of living with our Cairn Terrier, Honey, for 18 wonderful yrs. What a beautiful, elegant, fun, energetic terrier! Truly a “Diamond in the Ruff”!

Diamond in the “Ruff” — Meet The Cairn Terrier Dog
By Blake Kritzberg

The Cairn terrier hails from Scotland, as do its close and outstanding relatives, the Scottish terrier and the West Highland terrier. Much like another cousin, the Welsh terrier, the Cairn is probably an underappreciated breed in the United States, while it remains wildly popular in the old country. But its relative dark horse status is likely just fine with serious Cairn fans.

Unlike several fancier strains of terrier, the Cairn has never been subjected to Read the rest of this entry »

The Norfolk Terrier Is For All Folks

Posted by Kimberly on 24th November 2007

Norfolk Terriers are just adorable little dogs thought to have been developed by crossing Cairn terriers and Irish terriers.

Firstly, they were called the Cantab Terrier, later the Trumpington terrier, now the Norfolk terrier.

Great natured terriers great for families and singles alike!

The Norfolk Terrier
By Nikki Carroll

The Norfolk terrier, a breed only recently recognized, originated from Norfolk. They are most commonly mistaken for their close contemporary, the Norwich Terriers. Although they separated as late as 1964, they have many distinct differences. Besides the simple difference in size and their ears, the Norfolk terrier suffers from jealousy mush easier that the Norwich terrier. The Norwich Terriers also tend to adapt to urban life easier, but the Norfolk terrier can still be a man or woman’s best friend.

The “Down Under” Breed: The Australian Terrier

Posted by Kimberly on 24th August 2007

Australian Terriers are a tough little breed of terrier. When I lived in Perth, Western Australia, we were in the Darlington Hills. We had so much wildlife, even in our backyard, and my roommates had a little Australian Terrier named Cody.

He was such a sweetheart, and boy was he a little tough guy. Basically, everything can hurt or kill you in Australia (well, a tiny exaggeration, but for the most part…), and he was an outside dog. He had a little house, and dealt with the heat, the cold, the bugs, spiders, snakes and every other creature in our backyard, which was partly “forested”. This is normal for many little dogs in Aussieland. He was well adapted to this environment, that’s for sure! He was certainly tougher than me!!!

All About the Australian Terrier Dog Breed

The Australian Terrier is an Australian breed that was designed to kill vermin and snakes. They were bred from a variety of English terriers including the Dandie Dinmont, the Irish Terrier, the Yorkshire Terrier, and the Cairn Terrier. Wonderful World of West Highland White Terriers!

Posted by Kimberly on 22nd August 2007

sugar_westie-poo.jpgThe West Highland White Terrier is one of my favorite breeds of terrier. My mother has an 11 yr old Westie-Poo mix (Photo to the left: Sugar), and she is a lovely dog.

Since the Westie is so closely related to the Cairn Terrier, resembling a white Cairn of sorts, I am in love with this breed as well, since I had a Cairn terrier for 18 yrs. The photo below to the right looks so very similar to our Honey it is amazing. This dog is just slightly lighter than our Cairn was.

Both Westies and Cairns have that typical happy-looking “smile” on their face, just like the one the Westie has below… :D

I found a wonderful article to help you decide if you want to adopt a The West Highland White Terrier of your own, or for some more information on your Westies! I hope you find it information and enjoyable to read!

Terriers Don’t Shed

Posted by Kimberly on 14th August 2007

For the most part, terriers do not shed. However, if you have a mixed terrier breed, your dog may very well shed a little, or even a lot!

Many terriers, such as the Cairn terrier, need special attention because they hold onto their dead hair. A method called “plucking” is used to remove the hair, and it can be time consuming. However, we had a Cairn terrier for 18 yrs and, honestly, we had absolutely NO problem with shedding, and we rarely plucked her hair. So, not to worry…

Our miniature schnauzers DO NOT shed either. I can wear a black outfit and carry my little Kaptain around, who is blonde, and have absolutely no problem.

KaptainKnickknack.JPG

Great dogs to mix terriers with, so that you ensure they will not shed are the: Affenpinscher, Begamasco, Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Brussels Griffon, Chinese Crested, Chinese Shar-Pei, Coton de Tulear, Havanese, Irish Water Spaniel, Maltese, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Puli, Pumi, Shih Tzu, Toy Poodle, Basenji, Native American Indian Dog, Italian Greyhound, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. I am sure there are others, but this will give you a good start.

In the meantime, if your terrier mix does shed, brush them daily, so that you can keep that hair in one spot, in the brush for you to throw away, instead of your carpet, furniture, clothes, etc.

Also, here is a funny idea for you to try help alleviate the problem:

We Are Terrier Lovers Through-And-Through!

Posted by Kimberly on 22nd June 2007

Hello Fellow Terrier-Lovers!

We love our terriers so much, that I had to create a blog just for them. In the past, we used to have a Cairn Terrier…and we were hooked. Her name was Honey, and she lived to be 18 yrs old. The most interesting dog we have ever owned. Very intelligent, loyal, beautiful, tough, and definitely the “Queen Bee”.

We only had 1 big dog when I was growing up, which happened to be a Doberman (Sasha). She was very sweet, but extremely mischievious and destructive. We had a Yorkshire Terrier (Fluff) when I was about 3 or 4 yrs old, but she did not take kindly to my father.

A precious Cock-A-Poo “adopted” us when I was about 5 or 6 yrs old. Long story, which I am sure I will share in a future installment. (Poodles, by the way, are a type of terrier as well…did you know that?) We then got our little, blonde Cairn Terrier.

When I married my husband, he was a “big dog” lover. He liked Boxers, Dobermans, Rottweillers, etc. He wanted to have a big, tough dog he could run with and play hard with. However, being that we lived in an apartment, a large dog was not something we could have dealt with at that time. I had been begging him for a dog for years, and finally, the day came when I saw thee puppy for us!

We were in Dallas, TX at that time, and came upon a “flea market” that had a breeder that regularly comes out on a weekly basis. I saw a little puppy, who was the only terrier in a cage with a bunch of King Charles Spaniels. He was definitely a runt, but he was absolutely adorable. He was blonde and resembled my dog, Honey, who now lived with my mother, since I went away to university, when she was a puppy…but I knew he was not a Cairn Terrier, he was a Miniature Schnauzer.

Yes, people, schnauzers are every bit a terrier as a dog with the namesake…

I picked him up, and would not put him down until we made a definite decision. My hubby agreed at how sweet and adorable he was, and desiring to make me happy, he concurred that we would buy him. Well, this made my life!!! We named him Kaptain Knickknack, and he is the smartest dog I have ever seen…We speak to him like a person, and understands just about everything we say. He is so handsome, and is a super-rare colour for the breed. In fact, this colour is not even recognized by the AKC.

Kappy is 3 yrs old now, and is as sweet as ever. He’s been all over the United States travelling with us, and has seen a bit of Canada. He now has 2 little sisters, Knosey Konversation (right) and Kurious Kissyface (left), who both live up to their names…So fun!

Needless to say, we are hooked on these little terriers and always will be…

Check back again for new posts soon!

Cherish Your Terrier,

Kimberly Edwards :D
