Bull Terriers – Life With Them
By Donna Elliott Wickersham

Bull Terrier buyers and owners. We like to share this information with our customers when they purchase a puppy from us. It gives them an idea of what to expect from a Bull terrier if they have never owned one. Having owned several different breeds in the past, my opinion is the Bull terrier is unique. Not like most other breeds.

We have three at this time and think they are great. Yes, they are bullheaded, but so loving and loyal. They make wonderful companions. Mine are right at my feet at all times when I am home. They will help with the cooking, laundry and making the beds. They really like cuddling with you in bed. They will even sing with you. It doesn’t matter to them as long as they can be with you. They love to go in the car with us. Any where, it does not matter. Even a trip to the vet is exciting to them. Bull terriers are not much for long walks so, if you decide to walk them. Don’t go far, you may have to carry them back. My husband found this out not to long after we got our first Bullie. They only went about an eighth of a mile. When they were about half way back to our house, the dog decided he had had enough and sat down in the middle of the road. That was it, he was done. Here came my husband, down the road, carrying him over his shoulder. Now, we know not to go to far. 50 lbs is a lot of weight to carry, even for a short time.

They love to eat. Anything! Their bite is very strong, so if you value anything keep it up. They will chew it up and if they don’t digest it, it can result in surgery. Bull terriers also require a lot of water so, you will need to keep fresh water available for them at all times. Our Tronco, although he has several dishes of fresh water available to him, prefers to drink out of the toilet. Sounds disgusting but, it also leaves a wet seat. Bull terriers have a nose that curves down so, while drinking out of the toilet he blows bubbles, he can not breath because his nose is in the water and he has to come up for air several times dripping water everywhere. My fault, I left the lid up.

They also love toys, balls being the favorite. Any kind of ball will do. We have to limit the play time with them because they will play with a ball until the top of their nose bleeds. Yes, they use their big nose to push the ball around. They will entertain themselves by pushing the ball with their nose and then chasing it. When we talk about the ball around our Diosa, we have to spell it out backwards (llab) or she gets too excited. We have found the Kong toys or ones of similar strength to be the best because anything less is destroyed in no time.

Bull terriers need consistent discipline. Not physical. Never use physical discipline with a bull terrier. You don’t need to. They are bull headed but, very smart. Crate training works great with ours. They need their own space with their own bed or blanket. Too much crate time is not good for any animal but, bed time or when no one is home and you can’t leave them outside is good. Putting them up when you are not home is for their own safety. Some, not all, tend to get into things they should not when left unattended.

Life with our bull terriers is great. We are very happy with our choice of the bull terrier for our dogs. When we talk to other bull terrier owners, we get the same feeling from them. It is always an exciting conversation.

Bull Terriers for sale at Redhill Kennel. http://web.mac.com/redhillkennel We are a small licensed kennel breeding AKC bull terriers.
The Sealyham Terrier: Otter Terrier
By Michael Russell

The Sealyham Terrier has as its origin the region of Sealyham, in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is a cross of several different terriers and hounds, among them the Bull and the Dandie Dinmont and the Fox terriers and the Westy. Another important part of its genetic makeup is the Flandres Basset Hound. From the Basset the Sealyham acquired the short carriage and the heavy duty front legs capable of digging out burrows quickly and efficiently.

The Sealyham Terrier is a terrier which was custom designed by Captain John Tucker Edwardes, an Otter Hound enthusiast. Captain Edwardes desired to produce a dog which would be agile enough to rout out the Otters from between the rocks and crevices in which they hid, into his waiting pack of Otter hounds. Besides, he reasoned, the landowners of the Wales countryside needed a dog that could more easily get into the burrows of the animals which killed their chickens and destroyed their grain stores. His Sealyham Terrier fit the bill, being speedy enough to run with the hounds and small and agile enough to go to ground and less “scrappy” in nature so that he got along well with the pack. This terrier is by nature more of a pack dog than many terriers, this is perhaps due to the genetic addition of the Basset in the gene pool. Whatever the reason, this terrier, although “game” when it comes to the hunt, is more of a couch potato than other terrier types and is noted for being laid back.

The Sealyham is a small dog about 12 inches at the shoulder, with an appearance of stockiness to his body. The coat is the typical wire coat, being white with patches of badger on the head and ears. It is long and should be hand stripped, although pet owners are more likely to take it to the groomer and have it clipped. He is a dog whose form exemplifies his function. The body is deep chested and the back perfectly straight and while the front legs are short the hind legs have a well bent stifle. In layman’s terms this type of angulation means that the dog is exceptionally agile and suited to the type of terrain that is rough and rocky. It also means that he has endurance and speed, both necessary features for a dog meant to run the otter to the ground. Temperamentally he is a persistent dog and not likely to give in, stubbornness is a trait that can be difficult when it comes to training but is an excellent quality for a dog that hunts.

In modern day, this terrier is not such a hunter and has adapted himself well to civilized apartment life. He is gentle and affectionate and also adaptable. He prefers the indoor life and makes a great city dog, a short walk will suffice for exercise and he is quite happy spending the rest of his time with the family. If he is brought up with other dogs in the household, he gets along well with them.

The Sealyham is very popular as a show dog, having been registered with both the American kennel club and the British Kennel club since 1910.

Terriers, by nature, are exceptionally, naturally healthy creatures.

The lifespan of a Bull Terrier is between 10 – 14 years. Bulls live slightly shorter lives, on average, than their fellow terrier breeds; however, terriers tend to live very long lives compared to other breeds.

Bull terriers are prone to being deaf, and/or having atopy (allergic hypersensitivity of the skin), sometimes described as looking like acne.

In the breed’s early history, deafness was especially prevalent in white bullies bred to white bullies. This is not nearly so much the norm nowadays, however, due to responsible breeding practices.

Puppies can be tested as young as 8 weeks old to determine if there is a hearing problem.

* Tip: To ensure the best advantage of acquiring a healthy puppy is to adopt from a reputable breeder.

Again, the white dogs of the breed seem to be more affected by skin allergies than the other colors. This may cause your bull terrier to lick and chew persistently. If you notice your dog constantly fussing over it’s skin, take them to your veterinarian…It may be as simple as controlling it with an over-the-counter medication.

The voracious licking or chewing from the skin allergies has been known to result in an obsessive compulsive behavior, which may include tail chasing or self-mutilation from excessive chewing. Keep your eye on your pooch for such determined behavior.

Due to their short hair, the bull terrier one of the most hygienic of dog breeds. Terriers are hypoallergenic and do not shed, but with such short hair, there is little to do by way of grooming for these dogs: A weekly brushing, trimming nails when they get longer, tooth brushing 3-4 times/week, cleaning out their ears every couple of weeks with an alcohol dipped cottonball, and a monthly bath or so (unless they get especially dirty outside)…and you’re done!

This grooming regimen is much less time consuming as compared to grooming a longer-haired breed of terrier that also needs their coat “plucked”, like the Cairn, Wire Fox or Scottie.

Yes, I said triangular eyes…The Bull Terrier is the only breed that is recognized to have triangular eyes. Not the shape of the eyeball, but the shape of the eye…just like we would say a person has “almond-shaped” eyes.

Bull terriers often get a bad wrap, so to speak, as they are often mistakenly equated with the American Pit Bull Terriers…They are not Pit Bulls, they are Bull terriers. They are not directly related, but do come from the same ancestors.

The Bull Terrier was bred from 2 now extinct breeds: The Old English Bulldog and the Old English Terrier. They were affectionately referred to as the “Bull and Terrier”. The breed then split into 2 branches – the pure white Bull Terrier and the colored varieties.

Bull terriers are especially known for their egg-shaped head, with a Roman muzzle, and their triangular eyes, as mentioned earlier. They are thickly set and muscular with short, dense coats.

There is also a miniature of this breed, the Miniature Bull Terrier.

Always said to have the attitude of a “clown”, they play hard and are very intelligent. Bulls are very extroverted and love their humans! Their mind and body must be exercised regularly and they are not recommended for 1st time dog owners. However, they are good dogs to have around children, as they have a high pain tolerance and this drastically reduces the chance of a defensive wound to a child. They are great guard dogs, especially guarding children in their “doggie care”.

<img src="http://images.marketworks.com/hi/50/49711/AHFramed8503.jpg" alt="Punk Dog Bull Terrier Spuds Mackenzie? The Target mascot? That’s just to name a few…

The Bull Terrier dog…What a fun terrier breed!
