This is a tad of a rant, but more of a plead to students getting pets while they are in college or university…

My niece is in college for Nursing and just moved in with a student, who is also in the Nursing program at the same school.

They got along wonderfully beforehand and my niece took her time to get to know the girl, stay at her place and evaluate whether she’d be happy living there before she moved in.

Well, she’s been there for just over 1 month now, and is looking to move out to get her very own bachelorette apartment.

Why?
Her roommate’s boyfriend gave her a Boston terrier puppy for Christmas, and it was originally agreed upon that this puppy would live at the boyfriend’s home the majority of the time.

The puppy is now staying at the girls’ apartment full-time.

So?
Being a student in college, especially in a rigorous Nursing program, you are gone most of the day. Also, it’s the nature of the game that you are probably going to have to work as a student in college. Correct?

What Does This Mean?
It means that the puppy is left the entire day with no one to teach it, or care for it. In fact, she is not even crate training the pup.

The Roommate’s Expectation:
That my niece, her roommate, should take on full responsibility for training, walking and caring for the pup when she is not there.

This is not a realistic expectation. It was never agreed upon and shouldn’t be the responsibility of the roommate. It is unfair and ignorant, in my books.

The Result?
There are puppy pads everywhere, but without puppy mess. The Boston terrier doesn’t really know it’s supposed to go on there. It urinates and leaves it’s messes all over the apartment.

This is an unfair expectation of a roommate to put up with. The moment you walk into the apartment it wreaks to high heaven.

Plus, the puppy is learning bad behavior and is repeating it day in and day out.

Most importantly, this puppy is left by itself…that is unfair and unreasonable for any baby! It is not being taken care of. I don’t understand why you’d want a puppy, then not spend time with it.

Prevention of this Problem:
Every student in college is “just trying to make it” as it is. They’re all doing homework, running to classes and most work, not to mention family or other social activities that they’d like to participate in.

Unless you have the time to invest into training and caring for a puppy, do not get one, especially in college.

You cannot pawn off your mommy or daddy duties on your roommates.

This isn’t a principal just for college students, it goes for everyone out there. Do not get a pet that you are unable to care for, or don’t foresee yourself having time for.

Babies are a full-time job, and puppies are no exception to that rule!

Solution:
Adopt an a pet that has less caring for to do, such as fish, hermit crabs, gerbils or hedgehogs. This will relieve you of some stress, they’re easier to clean up after, and quieter than a barking puppy in an apartment building.

It can be difficult when guests come over, and it can also be downright embarrassing when your dog misbehaves.

However, we all know how much you truly love your Boston…You just need a simple set of guidelines to train them to behave…

It can be done and supposedly, can be done overnight! I’ve found this extremely helpful, if not life-changing, training specifically for Boston terriers.

That’s good to know, as the average age of a Boston terrier is 13 years old.

I went for a walk a few days ago on the pier in Port Dalhousie, and came across the cutest little Boston Terrier.

His name was Winston and he was black and white tuxedo with some brindling effect on his bottom.

Photo left: Hangin’, Photo right: Loungin’

What I loved about Winston is how friendly he was, especially with children and other dogs that were walking by.

Winston’s best feature…His tongue. Bless his heart, he has nerve damage that causes his tongue to hang out to the side almost 100% of the time.

However, what is his “handicap” to some, is his most endearing quality to me…

Photo left: Bright Light, Photo right: Before Winter Walk

As a term of endearment, they sometimes call him Winsock, because that’s what it would sound like if he were to say his name with his tongue out like that…LOL…Good sense of humor!

He is a happy guy with amazing owners, John & Dianne, that just love him to death!

* They promised to send me these photos of Winston to show with this post…I’m so glad they did!

Photo above: Yummy

I’m sure you’ve fallen in love with him, just like I did!

Reported today from Evanston, Illinois: Zoe, a blind and nearly deaf, elderly Boston Terrier survives being missing for 13 days…But this isn’t the worst part!

She fell into a 6′ window well, and was left for dead. 13 days after going missing, a gardener notices her still body in that widow well only 40′ from the owner’s house, and thought she was surely dead. However, Zoe moved and was still fighting for her life.

In that 13 days, she had lost 1/2 of her body weight…nearly 6 lbs!

Zoe’s owner is ecstatic and relieved to find her baby alive and in fairly good condition, after shelters told her the Boston Terrier probably would be dead after being missing 1 wk.

Praise the Lord, and Bless her little soul! Zoe is a 12-yr old Boston Terrier that has lost 1 eye to glaucoma, and has cataracts in the other. What a miracle she survived!

To read more on this story: Elderly, blind dog survives disappearance

Unbelievable story of the terrier spirit! They are fighters and are rugged creatures. I’m sure this owner’s heart is eased, and she couldn’t be more relieved and grateful that her Zoe is alive and home, safe and sound!

* Tip (Learned The Hard Way From Many A Terrier Owner): Ensure your terrier is safe and sound, enclosed in a secure fence with latched gates every time they are outside and loose. Always keep your terrier on a leash when outside of fenced areas.

I hope you enjoyed today’s installment of Terrier Lover! Amazing story! Until next time…

Love Your Terrier,

P.S. This is just so appropriate for today’s story! “I asked God for a true friend, so He sent me a Boston Terrier”:

…Always fashionable at parties wearing their “tuxedos”, Boston Terriers are the second most popular of the terrier breeds as companion pets. Now that’s saying something! They were also the 1st US breed to be recognized by the AKC back in 1893.

They will gasp and snort in a laborious manner, scaring themselves and their owners alike. Food or liquid may get caught underneath the elongated palate, which hinders their breathing and irritates their throat. It should spontaneously resolve, but you may help them by calming them down, and rubbing their throat. It is typical and will not hurt the Boston terrier whatsoever.

These little terriers are also snorters and snorers! Have fun…There is nothing funnier than dogs doing the things humans do…I love taking video of my schnauzers when they are snoring! Too funny! However, these could be indicators of more serious health issues, so contact your vet if this occurs regularly.

The Origins of the Boston Terrier
By Carl Johannsen

The Boston Terrier originated in the late nineteenth century. The Boston Terrier originated when Robert C. Hooper purchased a type of dog known as Hooper’s Judge. Hooper’s Judge was a cross between an English White Terrier and an English Bulldog. In the year 1893, the American Kennel Club recognized the breed of dog known as the Boston Terrier. This type of dog is thought to be a true American mascot because it was the first dog to ever be recognized by the American Kennel Club.

The Boston Terrier gained even more notoriety when it was deemed the mascot of famed Boston University. Then in the year 1979 the Boston Terrier was named the state dog of Massachusetts. Another reason for the Boston Terriers nation wide acclaim is that this type of dog was featured in several of the Wizard of Oz books. The famous dog Toto was often drawn as a Boston Terrier.

The Boston Terrier was at first used as a ratting dog. Over the years the Boston Terrier has taken over the role of beloved companion and pet. The Boston Terrier weighs between fifteen and twenty-five pounds. This type of dog reaches a maximum height of either fifteen or seventeen inches. The Boston Terrier is easily recognized because of the white markings mixed with black, seal or brindle. Usually the noticeable coat of the Boston Terrier is a combination of all three. In the sunlight Boston Terriers appear to be black in color with red highlights. The coat of the Boston Terrier is very smooth and short. The Boston Terrier requires a minimum amount of grooming.

The Boston Terrier has a life expectancy of fourteen years. This type of dog is known for being very good with children and other pets. The Boston Terrier is most happy when kept indoors as a companion. The Boston Terrier is in the class of non-sporting dog. The Boston Terrier is a wonderful pet and companion. (Photo: Boston terrier puppy)
