Precious Update: What’s Up With The Cast?

by Kimberly Edwards on June 4, 2008

Terrier Newsflash:
PreciousAs you know, Precious, my mother’s miniature schnauzer, had to get a cast put on about 1 month ago for a broken baby toe on her left hind foot.

Well, after going to the vet at least 9 times to get the cast reapplied, for reasons like:

1. She chewed it off.

2. She somehow could reach her foot, even though she had one of those funny collars on, and chewed it off again.

3. She ripped off the bigger collar that we were given and chewed it again.

4. The Ziploc bag rips through while she’s outside and now it’s soaked through and really gross.

5. We had an infection at the top of the cast from the tape pulling the hair out, which she has been on antibiotics for for weeks too.

6. The thicker bag, used for glucose IV bags, tore open outside because it was worn out.

7. We discovered Press N’ Seal only goes so far, and is only so thick and rips open.

8. The entire cast pulled off and unraveled, trailing behind her, due to the glucose IV bag’s open hole (for the hook it is attached to when given to a dog as IV) got stuck on something on the ground.

9. Today, it is just really gross after losing the IV bag again outside…plus, it is partly chewed off…She is a Houdini of sorts with the collar.

* Needless to say, our vet jokes about us having frequent flier miles…LOL

Problem is, the little toe is not really healing, according to extra x-rays done about 2 weeks ago. If the baby toe does not heal, we have to go to a specialist, who will most likely suggest to have the baby toe amputated.

Precious, so long as the cast is intact and still in the right place, does not limp…In fact, she uses her cast quite well, but when that toe inside is not in the proper position, she limps everywhere…

Today’s visit to the vet bought her an overnight stay, as the tape used to secure the cast underneath has caused a might infection on her leg and foot. The vet washed and disinfected her leg and foot, sedated her slightly, as she is so anxious going to the vet now after all her visits in past weeks…Poor Precious!

You may ask, “Why not just let it heal all by itself? That’s what would happen if they were in the wild.” Problem is, she will limp everywhere, it may not heal, as it is behaving right now, and she will be in all intents and purposes, lame in that leg. Not cool…

The broken toe that is not mending would simply be gone, and she would get used to that. I know it sounds awful, but there is really no other alternative, as explained to us.

Well, just wanted to give an update as I have been receiving emails and stumbles asking me how our Precious is making out.

Pray for her little toe to heal…We will have 1 more set of x-rays done in about 1 week’s time.
