Terriers Don’t Shed

by Kimberly Edwards on August 14, 2007

For the most part, terriers do not shed. However, if you have a mixed terrier breed, your dog may very well shed a little, or even a lot!

Many terriers, such as the Cairn terrier, need special attention because they hold onto their dead hair. A method called “plucking” is used to remove the hair, and it can be time consuming. However, we had a Cairn terrier for 18 yrs and, honestly, we had absolutely NO problem with shedding, and we rarely plucked her hair. So, not to worry…

Our miniature schnauzers DO NOT shed either. I can wear a black outfit and carry my little Kaptain around, who is blonde, and have absolutely no problem.

Great dogs to mix terriers with, so that you ensure they will not shed are the: Affenpinscher, Begamasco, Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Brussels Griffon, Chinese Crested, Chinese Shar-Pei, Coton de Tulear, Havanese, Irish Water Spaniel, Maltese, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Puli, Pumi, Shih Tzu, Toy Poodle, Basenji, Native American Indian Dog, Italian Greyhound, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. I am sure there are others, but this will give you a good start.

In the meantime, if your terrier mix does shed, brush them daily, so that you can keep that hair in one spot, in the brush for you to throw away, instead of your carpet, furniture, clothes, etc.

Also, here is a funny idea for you to try help alleviate the problem:
